Specifically, What Usb Bluetooth Dongle Is Known
« on: November 24, 2005, 05:20:16 am »
Specifically, EXACTLY what model USB Bluetooth dongle works with the Cxx00 line of Zaurii?

Please state the model number and ROM that you are using it with.  If you had to do anything super special to get it working please point us in the direction of that info.

(Btw, I DID search the Cxx00 forum before asking. There is only one hit for "usb bluetooth" and that thread/post gives no concrete info at all.)

Thanks in advance!

I have the Socket USB Bluetooth dongle. Not sure which of the various numbers on the back would be useful to identify it. I don't think Socket has changed it for a while. It worked without any changes (that I recall) in Cacko 1.23 on the C1000. It was recognized in pdaXrom RC12, but the bluetooth dialup app to my mobile phone did not work, and my attempts to edit the bluetooth config files were unsuccessful, though I strongly expect if I had kept at it I would have gotten it working.

I dial up on a Motorola e815 to Verizon's EVDO broadband network and get DSL connection speed most anywhere I have cell phone service. It uses much less power than a wifi card as well. Highly recommended.

The Blueooth spec says all USB bluetooth card should be the same so that drivers for one work for the rest (there are a couple that are diffretn and require firmware loading but thats documented in the linux kernel), same goes for serial and one other bus type (cant remember off the top of my head)

so almost any should work out of the box, i have a couple a Belkin one that works and a cheap class 1 chinesse one that works great (with external antenna)

if your ROM dosent have it its easy to find the bluez packages.

it sounds like you are having a problem of sorts, care to tell us whats broken?

Nothing broken yet, I'm just curious as to my options.  My new C3100 is on the way and one of the first things I want to do is to connect my c3100 to my sl-6000L via bluetooth for filesharing etc. I'm not sure I'd use it for that task permanently simply because I'm not sure bluetooth will have anywhere near the bandwidth that a WiFi card would.  My  hopes are that in a finished product I will be able to leave my sl-6000 turned on in my backpack and  be able to plop the backpack down somewhere out of the way (like hanging on the back of my wheelchair for example) and be able to use it as a "wireless server" to greatly expand my Storage and media options while only having the C3100 in my hands.  But I want to get my feet wet and explore the various options.

My main reason for making this thread was that I was quite tired of finding out after the fact that the "insert any item you wish here" is not compatible with my Z.

So thanks a bunch for the info guys!  I'm going to pick up a cheap usb bt module or two on ebay now.

PS- If you're reading this thread for the first time, since there's not one like it on the forums right now feel free to post any new info you find so that it may benefit others also!  Don't forget to be specific as possible about the make and model.  I'll be posting my own results back here soon.

Well, I have something similar planned. Since my mobile phone has got bluetooth and a 1GB memory stick, I was thinking of accessing it via bluetooth from my Zaurus. All I need is to find either a tiny lil usb bluetooth dongle or a bluetooth cf card.
SL-C3000 - pdaXii13 build5.4.9 (based on pdaXrom beta3) / SL-C3100 - Sharp ROM 1.02 JP (heavily customised)
Netgear MA701 CF, SanDisk ConnectPlus CF, Socket Bluetooth CF, 4GB Kingston CF,  4GB pqi SD, 4GB ChoiceOnly SD, 2GB SanDisk SD USB Plus, 1GB SanDisk USB Plus, 1GB Transcend SD, 2GB SanDisk MicroSD with SD adaptor, Piel Frama Leather Case, GoldX 5-in-1 USB cable, USB hub, USB mouse, USB keyboard, USB ethernet, USB HDD, many other USB accessories...

I would like to find a bt cf card that actually works and is "flush" when inserted, then I could use it to sync my ics/vcf files via bt, automatically.
SL-C3100 current: Stock/Tetsu 18h
Socket BT CF Card
Linksys WCF-12 802.11b/Cheapie USB Ethernet

Bam,

I'm working hard on an answer for your sitation as the same question has been asked about 6 or 7 times now in the various forums.  I have scratched 12 CF modules off the list so far as protruding from dimensions found on their website.  I do have one on the way that I actually purchased whose dimensions are not stated anywhere so I'm a wee bit hopeful but not much.  I'll keep pegging away at it until I run out of Makes and Models to inquire about- I'm a good person for this particular research because it's not only simple enuf for a non-genius like me to get his head around, but I also have a TON of extra time on my hands.

Unlike most of the ppl inquiring on the boards about a "flush" design just so it doesn't stick out and look unsightly or catch on things , the thought has been much impelled by the C3100 model owners who wish to remove the internal CF microdrive and switch it out in favor of a bluetooth CF card.  (This might be what your describing above I can't really tell for sure.) I was shocked at the though personally, (I'm always too narrow minded and assume everyone has my particular wants/needs, I'm bad like that- Adf, Doc, Spec and the rest of the gang have to politely bonk me over the head on a regular basis to remind me to get my turtle head out of my shell and think about it from the rest of the worlds point of view!)Those users interested in that config simply are more interested in using a 1gb sdcard for all the data storage they permanently need and want embedded bluetooth more than the storage space.

Anyway, for those particular users I just don't think we're gonna get close enuf to make it work without modifying the shell of the CF card.  On a few of these models I'd be QUITE interested to see if with the plastic shell removed that protrudes from a normal CF port if it would then be "flush" enuf to install internally in the internal CF bay. I wouldn't want to use it as an external solution because of the risk that those electronic parts being unprotected both to the environment and me (and I'm more dangerous than any environment ever encountered!)  Alternately I think it would be worth a try for those wanting a "flush" card for the external port, if we can find one that is totally flush with the plastic cover removed to then re-cover the exposed components with a hot glue from a glue gun and trim the hot glue to the exact size to be flush externally. Another concern of this process would be heat- I think the glue would act as an insulator and make an already warm card waaaay too hot to operate normally.

While all that sounds really good, and it is whithin the capabilities of my limited skillz to do, I certainly do NOT have enough money to randomly buy each make and model of CF BT cards and break them open until I find one that would qualify!  And you can bet yer bippy that the manufacturers aren't going to willingly publish the exact size of the component board that is under the plastic cover cowl to the public and in so doing encourage them from doing this very thing.  So if I can't find one "ready and right-sized out of the box" then research into a solution here will crawl to a complete halt.

But if yer gonna dream....dream big. I'm hoping I'll luck up soon and I'll certainly post the solution to all concerned if I succeed.

Take Care,
-NeuroShock

With a bit of modifcation you would have alot more area internaly where the microdrive sits as the soket is recsesed futher in than the external socket

Reeeeally?  Now that's intriguing. That just may make it workable.  I need to go scratch up some pics of a dissasembled C3100.  I've seen some somewhere around here.

That black thing around the mirodrive can be modified for a bit of space and if you dont mind getting rid of the SD card slot you can gain a massive amount of space

Socket has a CF bluetooth card that does not extend beyond the slot. Don't know if it works in the Z, though the Socket USB bluetooth dongle does.

Awesome!  I'm looking to use a Class 1 USB Bluetooth Adapter with my recently acquired C1000, but I'm not sure that it will 'just work' as yours did.  Is anyone using one with their C1000/C3x00?!

Thanks,

Jason.
