Problem with qinstall
« on: February 10, 2004, 05:01:05 pm »
I put tkcRom on my sl-5600 yesterday.  I installed a bunch of packages with out any problem.  It has been running great.  Today I went to install fbvncserver and qinstall closed as soon as I selected the package.  I ran it from the terminal and got:

qeclient_sendcommand(): server child accidentally finished!

Any ideas?

Ok.  I found another part of the problem.  If I have a cf memory card in, it will work just fine.  If I take it out, it doesn\'t.  I have a Netgear Wifi CF card and it doesn\'t work when that is in.

Hi, I\'m the \"guest\" from the above post...

Using your observation with qinstall installing correctly when a CF card is in, I think I found us a fix.

Make sure you have your CF memory card inserted, and a SD card if you have one.  Then try this:

mv /etc/mtab /etc/mtab-bak

and then do this...

cp /proc/mounts /etc/mtab

Now you can remove your CF card, replace it with your WiFi card.  Try installing some packages.  If it doesn\'t work or if you have any wierd side effects just undo the changes you just did to /etc/mtab

rm /etc/mtab
mv /etc/mtab-bak /etc/mtab

The only side effect I have seen so far is that it replaces your CF icon in the \'Files\' tab with a folder icon.  You CF card in the files tab is now named \'Storage /dev/hda1\'

Let me know how that works for you... The problem has been reported to pronto but he has not been able to duplicate it on his own Zaurus.  We\'ll help each other figure this out.

What I posted above also fixes the problem with the tkcrom and qswap/memory applet not being able to create/activate a swapfile on a SD card.

Now the only problem I have is using the memory applet with the rotation plugin.  It seems to lock up when I try to rotate when the applet is enabled.  Very strange considering that the same guy wrote both packages.  If I uninstall the applet the rotation works fine.  Zynergy5600 has the same problem.

Thats not a real problem though.  I just installed qswap instead and check the memory with the sysinfo.

Otherwise, I am very happy with this rom.  I\'m using it with the \'special\' patched kernel w/o any problems.

Sweet.  That is the fix.  Thanks.  What does the special patched kernel do?  I haven\'t seen that.

Check out the kernel patch in the Zug Downloads section...

Quote
This is the standard Sharp SL-5600 kernel with the Linux kernel pre-emptive patch applied which almost doubles the responsiveness of the 5600. The workaround for the XScale PXA-250 cache errata (a bug in the CPU) has also been turn off, which gives a small speed increase. All this makes applications load much faster and allows you to do things like play 320x240 DivX video at a decent frame rate. The Wireless Extensions patch has also been applied.

I\'ve tried the overclocking kernel, but I could feel the back of my zaurus getting warmer while using it (it may have been in my head).

The second one listed is the one I installed.
