Help!, Can't Flash :(
« on: December 19, 2005, 11:44:58 am »
Hi people, I recently bought a Z SL-5500 from a friend and since i got it i have been trying to flash it with OpenZaurus, currently the Z has Sharp Rom 3.10.

I have followed the the tutorial in the OpenZaurus site but every time I try to re-flash the the two leds start blinking an thats all, i have to full reset.

I have tried with OZ 3.5.3 and 3.5.4 and get the same error.

I'm copying the files to the Z via the samba interface, i think maybe the files are being corrupted in the process or something like that.

The card i'm using for flashing is a PRETEC CF of 512M.

The cf is formatted to vfat and i'm copying the files to the root dir of the card

Well, that's it... does somebody know wth is happening?

What files are you copying to what file names? Also you should check the md5 checksum if you think the files are corrupt (best to check it before you flach your Z)

I'm copying the following files to the zaurus:

opie-image-collie-20050407173817.rootfs.jffs2
zImage-collie-64-0-20050407102515.bin

The using the console  I rename them to:

 initrd.bin
 zImage

 Files downloaded from:

Good idea,  I'll do a checksum in the Zaurus

UPDATE: I checked the files with md5sum in the Zaurus, they are OK.

... I have read quite a lot of stuff in the last 4 hours and can't find the reason why the Z can't be flashed.

I'm starting to supect from the CF card, as I said before its a PRETEC 512MB Industrial.

I even reformatted the card as they say on the OZ site tutorial (mkfs.vfat -F 16 /dev/hda1) but its the same.

Has somebody flashed the Z with a 512mb Card?
Has somebody flashed the Z with a PRETEC 512mb Card?

I have another CF but is a 8mb one....

Is there another metod to flash the SL-5500??

UPDATE: It seems like the problem is the 512mb card, i tried to flash with the 8mb card without any files and the leds turned on, keep like that for 4 seconds and then turned off, that means the Z recognized the card but couldn't find the files. I did the same test with the PRETEC card and the leds started blinking.

So, I have concluded that I'll have lo look for a 16/32/64 older CF and try to flash from it...

PD: Is there a minimal opie package that I can fit on a 8mb card?, i can add more software later, i just need OZ working...

Not Opie, but you might be able to fit the bootstrap image on a card of that size - it's a text-only single-user interface though - then you'd need to install opie on the top.

C750 OZ3.5.4 (GPE, 2.6.x kernel)
SL5500 OZ3.5.4 (Opie)
Nokia 770
Serial GPS, WCF-12, Socket Ethernet & BT, Ratoc USB
WinXP, Mandriva

Hmm, was thinking about doing that...but its to much work and i don't have so much free time... I'll better look for another CF.

 Thanks anyway.

If you can leave it attached to the net then it may not be so diffiicult. You would only need to install some of the various task-*.ipk meta packages (each of which installs other packages).

I can't tell you which off the top of my head, but a quick comparison of the bootstrap and opie-image.bb files should give you a relatively small list of things to install.

One thing to check R you using a MS box to push the files onto the Z with Samba?

If so do you have the hide file extensions set in explorer.  Your zImage may be zImage.bin on the CF card.

Yeah, I double-checked the names, ls -la doesn't hide anything

I'm sure the fault is of the 512 CF.

OK, got a 32M Sandisk card and re-flashed my Z succesfully, now running Cacko Rom with 64-0 layout.
