Ibm Microdrive 1gb V.s Kingston Cf Flash 1gb
« on: December 25, 2005, 03:43:03 am »
Anyone has tried this 1GB microdrive already? I read from the pdaxrom site's faq that it would be better if i use the microdrive for swap fs. Howerver, the 4GB microdrive is still not affordable by me at the moment and it is not popular in singapore. One guy asked me to trade my Kingston CF for his IBM 1GB MD. Is it worth? How about the speed of the 1GB MD compared to the CF flash?

Thanks alot ! Merry Xmas and Happy New Year !

As far as I know, all < 4GB microdrives are older technology than the current crop of 4GB+ drives. The old tech is slower, much more power hungry, runs hotter, and isn't nearly as shock resistant. I wouldn't reccommend them over solid-state CF cards.

Name brand 1GB solid-state CF cards are relatively cheap these days. I don't know about Singapore, but in the US, Sandisk and other manufacturers offer lifetime warranties so if you do manage to kill it with a swapfile (tougher than you may think with a good name-brand card), you just send it back for a free replacement.
