Special Features Of Cacko Rom?
« on: January 05, 2006, 02:46:58 pm »
I really don't see too much different about the Cacko rom other than that the network setup appears to be in English and usable, but I only connect to one network anyway so I really don't care and the addressbook works a little better.

Some of my apps run much better under the Sharp rom and the fonts are much too small in the apps that DO run in Cacko and I imagine changing the defaults would be a voyage through terminal-land.

One app that I could use in Sharp that is unusable in Cacko is the crossword puzzle app - crossword_0.0.3_arm.ipk - just displays a blank white box.  Zsafe won't save the file that I import - when I open it after importing my file, the file is gone.

Old apps go into a BLACK screen for long long seconds before they open.

Why all the enthusiasm for Cacko?

I am not sure what your specific problems are, as I have not seen any of them.

The Cacko rom fixes a range of things, and also adds some new functionality. I am very very pleased with it, and would never ever return to the stock rom.

If you check the Cacko website ( [a href=\"http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/cacko.html)]http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/cacko.html)[/url] , you will find a list of the changes.

I let you read, instead of repeating here...

But I feel you must be doing something wrong, since pretty much everybody who tried the Cacko rom liked it....

I think you need to stick with a rom that works best for you.  All roms have the pluses and minuses.  I tried them all and decided to stick with the stock since it works with everything and i have no problems with it.

Cacko is much more than a set of applications and a qtopia theme - like an iceberg, there's a lot that's not visible:

- device drivers
- up to date libraries
- kernel patches and speedups
- wide selection of applications all tested

If you have a problem with a specific application, do shout about it and give people a chance to fix it!

Given the cost of your cacko rom package, you've not exactly lost anything, have you!

It IS very attractive and may have a lot under the surface I haven't yet discovered.
So far, I can't get Doom to work with it.  Heretic and the snes games have backwards upside down keypad.  And the Advanced file manager won't let me  copy files to some directories or change files as I was able to do in Sharp.  In Sharp I could always "trick" Linux by renaming a file in advanced fm, opening it as text and changing something and then rename it back and copy it back to its directory - you gotta do what you gotta do to get the job done.  :-)

Also,  if I could get the Sandisk ConnectPlus card to work as a wifi card I might like Cacko a WHOLE lot.

Can anyone help with these problems?
In Sharp, I installed the files according to Cresho's directions and snes and heretic and doom all played well together!  And the keypad was correct for the games.

So far. the Sharp has worked better.

It may not be a good idea to install the cacko lite version if you're just starting out with a C series zaurus, because you will probably miss out important driver packages, etc.
I suggest you install the full Cacko 1.23 package instead, it still only takes around 35MB of internal memory. This will provide a stable and "known" base for you to install other applications and makes troubleshooting much easier.

On the other hand, there ARE instances where certain hardware works with the original Sharp ROM but not with Cacko. Unfortunately in the case of your Sandisk Connectplus card,  currently it doesnt appear to work with either ROM, so there is little advantage for you to stick with the original ROM anyway.

actually in my opinion Cacko was exactly what it has always been....a fix to a stock rom(plus alot of other goodies). Basically Maslovsky is doing what SHARP should be doing, thinking and improving with the times. Sharp should hire him to do the next rom for the next Zaurus, because obviously sharp is a little behind the times. I dont have it installed because I want to know whats been tweaked and why(aka I wanna do it myself) kinda like the "little" tweak on the memory applet I did so I can put my swapfile on my hdd3 and increased it to 96Mb, gonna change that to hdd2 as soon as I find time to repartition my hdd one more time.

BTW Kudo's, Maslovsky for a GREAT job!

Uh,oh,  I thought I DID install the FULL version of Cacko.  I installed SL-C1000-Qtopia-1.23-1029311005.zip.

I was wondering why the apps in that long list on the Cacko page weren't already installed.  I was looking forward to playing those games listed too.

Did I install the light version by mistake?

I got everything working (including Kismet) except for the crossword app, and the Doom and Heretic keys are wrong.

Yeah, but it looked like there was a "way" to get the Sandisk ConnectPlus card to work with the Cacko Rom.

I have a Belkin card which works so it's not a deal breaker and I'm liking Cacko A LOT better since I discovered that the hotlinks in the email open up in Opera instead of NetFront!  That's a major plus for me.

yes..., thats the full Cacko. Sorry for the confusion.
I thought you had installed the Lite version, otherwise why would you still need to install the hostap and prism3 drivers (like you mentioned here  https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16951 )? They are already included in the full Cacko package.

Maybe you forgot to install the actual puzzle files to work with the crossword app?

Blush.  Blush.     You're right.  I discovered that this morning and voila! it works.  That was my last desperate try at fixing it.  It automatically detects the puz files on any media - they don't have to be put in a special folder.  I wish more apps were built like that!
