So, I have a pretty new sl-c1000 running a quite stock english-flashed qtopia ROM and very few add-on programs(qswap.....32Mb swap on SD Card, TextMaker).
I find that the machine tends to hang when doing certain specific tasks. A good example of this is when I am trying to load a large web-page (using Netfront 3.1), but there are other, less predictable hangs. It's NOT just a case of waiting for the large page to load, I give it lots of time. It's more a question of the processor seeming to be stuck in some repetitive routine which goes nowhere.
So, I can't seem to find any easy way to kill such a program from running.....short of a soft reset anyway. Does anyone have suggestions to: a) prevent it from getting "stuck" in the first place, .....or an easy way to shut down a process/program, short of a reset??

Open a terminal and type
ps -ux | grep name_of_program
this will list the instances of your program plus a bit of junk. Find the instance that you want to kill look at its process number (PID, first number in the line) and type
kill -9 PID
That's it, or some variant thereof. An alternative is to install an utility called "top" which lists programs according to their CPU usase and allows you to kill them from within top.

If you prefer something with a GUI (and who doesn't?) you might want to try Process Manager:

Thanks for the help.
Here's a newby question: when I go to the "Top" page or "process Manager" and select the .ipk file for download, it downloads as .tar in both cases. Is this normal? In which case, what do I do to install .tar files on my sl-c1000. I have a WinXP desktop only btw.

Your browser must be automatically decompressing the file. A solution is to download the file using the Zaurus.

Yes, its normal, at least in Win.

Sometimes IE (yuck!) identifies an .ipk file as .tar, so the downloaded file ends up with the wrong extension.
Simply rename the .tar extension back to .ipk and you're good to go.

And you might want to change your browser to Opera or Firefox (both are free software and work much better)
