Sd/cf + Jap. Dictionary Questions For C860
« on: January 25, 2006, 11:28:19 pm »
I bought my c860 about a year ago in Japan but haven't gotten much use out of it. The main reason is I've been unable to find Japanese/English and English/Japanese dictionaries that suit my needs.

I want a dictionary that gives example sentences such as Kodansha's furigana dictionary.

1) Does anyone know a dictionary such as that which I can find or buy to run on a Zaurus? (That will require it to be in epwing format won't it?, I don't know too much about how to do this).

My other question is re. cf/sd cards for storage and internet access. I'm thinking that I'd like to get an SD card for internet use and a CF/microdrive for storage (using the cards in this way seems to be cheaper than the other way around?)

2) Can someone explain how wifi works? I've never used wireless internet access before, where will my Zaurus work?

3) Can anyone recommend good sd/cf cards for me? Are there any compatability issues with the Zaurus or will any card work? I'm thinking of buying a large card (I hear CF cards come in 4/6/8 gig sizes).

4) Does anyone have some Japan-specific shopping advice? I live in Kyoto and was thinking of buying through http://www.kakaku.com/ (Japanese web site) which I've used in the past and seems very cheap for Japan.

Thanks for any advice.

Regarding dictionaries:

I've yet to receive my Z (it's been purchased, but a friend of mine just happened to know somebody who was coming to Toronto in the near future, so I managed to arrange for her to bring it over), but currently on my PC I use the fifth edition of Kenkyusha's 新和英大辞典, also known as Green Goddess, and I think it fits your description quite well. It's filled with details and examples, and is much more comprehensive than Kodansha's Furigana dictionary. It's only a J/E dictionary though - I currently don't have a good E/J at my disposal, either.

Once I receive my Z (in around a week) I'll be able to tell you how well it works on it. The data files do take up around 100MB so you'd definitely need to have a decently sized flash card to store all the dictionaries you need.

I'm assuming that your familiar with Edict (http://ftp.monash.edu.au/pub/nihongo/00INDEX.html#dic_fil)?
There is also an examples dictionary available on that page; while I don't use Edict itself that much, I have found the examples dict. to be rather useful.

You'll have to use a CF WiFi card; the Zaurus's SD support is limited to memory cards. (Technically, there does exist an SD WiFi card that works with some Zaurus models; however, it seems that it is mostly a hack and that the performance is subpar).

I usually use kakaku as well.

Well, there's quite a big selection of EPWing format dictionaries, eg
[a href=\"http://www.epwing.or.jp/lineup/lineup.html]http://www.epwing.or.jp/lineup/lineup.html[/url]
http://www.nichigai.co.jp/translator/list1.html

You can probably find them in major bookstores like Kinokuniya, and Biccamera's  software section, but you'll get better prices online.

I bought the Green Goddess from nifty:
http://store.nifty.com/goods/goods.aspx?goods=00801KEN0028

Jack Halpern's Kanji dictionary from Amazon JP:
http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4...7375471-2175513

and "Super Daijirin" direct from Sanseido's website:
http://www.sanseido-publ.co.jp/publ/ep/cd_ep_daijirin.html
Proper-name dictionary

The Super Daijirin pack is quite value-for-money, as it includes the main Daijirin JP/JP dictionary (much more "readable" than Kojien), plus the Daily Concise JP/EN and EN/JP dictionaries, so I didn't need to buy a separate EN/JP software.

I also use freeware dictionaries like the Example Sentence Dictionary and ENAMDICT to round off my collection:
http://www.hloeffler.info/zaurus/
currently:  SL-C860 Cacko 1.23 ROM converted to full Japanese
formerly: SL-C1000 Cacko 1.23 ROM converted to full Japanese
Sony WL100 wifi CF card (handed down from old Clie)
A-Data 60X 2GB SD card loaded with Super Daijirin, Green Goddess5, NJECD and Eijiro

It works fine on the Zaurus, either with Zten/Ztenv or the C3x00's built-in Zdict.
You need 312 MB of storage space though.

Thankyou everyone for your replies. I didn't have a chance until today to play around with my Zaurus again.

I have Cacko1.22 with full Japanese support setup. I re-installed the translation software and the original Jisho that comes with the Zaurus and added Kanji Nirvana. I also installed ztenv with edict, which is working fine.

I don't know how to add the edict examples dictionary to ztenv. (I don't know much about using my Zaurus).

Can anyone give instructions? I used the example directions on this page:
http://www.wbcd.org/computing/zaurus/part_12.html
and created a folder structure as is suggested. I just copied the catalogs file from the edict folder and added it to an edict example folder. This allowed me to add the examples dictionary in ztenv, but it doesn't seem to be returning examples. Do I need to edit the catalogs file?

Am I supposed to setup the "jp_examples.fpwebz" file in ztenv in a different way?

Also, can I add the original Jisho dictionary to ztenv? How would I go about doing that?

Is there any other software that Japanese language learners would recommend? I'll look into buying the green goddess dictionary later, that sounds great.

Thanks again.
