mini-HowTo: Installing dictionary browser Zten on zaurus SL5500

Zten, a japanese dictionary browser/lookup, you\'ll need to install dictionary books, fonts and some tweaks to make it visible on zaurus SL5500.

Homepage : http://wiki.gohome.org/zten/

1. Download and install the following main packages.

      http://www.gohome.org/zten/kakasi_2.3.4-2_arm.ipk
      http://www.gohome.org/zten/zten_1.6.2_arm.ipk
      http://zaurus-ja.sourceforge.jp/feed/monaf..._2.22-1_all.ipk

2. Download/install dictionary books, you can select book from this link:

      http://openlab.ring.gr.jp/edict/fpw/

Notice that, most of the book is in zip format.

You need to Open a konsole, switch to superuser and create directory \'dict\' under your CF/SD card.

      bash-2.05$ su -
      # mkdir /mnt/card/dict or # mkdir /mnt/cf/dict

Now, copy those downloaded books to this \'dict\' directory and unzip it, you can delete the source after unzipping.

Assumeing you are already done the transfer of dictionary books to \'dict\' directory.

      # cd /mnt/card/dict or # cd /mnt/cf/dict
      # ls                <- list available book under \'dict\' directory
      # unzip edict-fpw1.2.1.zip
      # unzip wordnet-1.6-fpw1.1.2.zip
      # ...

Repeat unzip command for each dictionary book.

3. Change working directory to fontdir and do font file linking.

      # cd /opt/QtPlamtop/lib/fontdir
      # ln -s monafont_110_50_t10.qpf lcfont_110_50_t10.qpf
      # ln -s monafont_130_50_t10.qpf lcfont_130_50_t10.qpf

4. Download and install Zstyle, Unismall and Cyberbit unifont.

      http://www.softforge.de/zstyle/download/zs...e_1.4.1_arm.ipk
      http://zaurus-ja.sourceforge.jp/feed/unism...l_1.0.0_arm.ipk
      http://qpe.sourceforge.net/packages/ipaq/q...2.3.0-3_arm.ipk

Next, using zstyle to change the default english UI font (Helvetica, point 10) to unifont that support/display english and japanese character (Unismall, point 10).

Startup zstyle, goto font tab (i.e. second tab from the left), select Unismall, size 10 and tap OK.

A Restart Qtopia popup and awaiting your response. Tap \'No\' to close the prompt. Instead of restart Qtopia, you are required to reboot zaurus to switch the UI font.

After rebooting, Your english UI font should look smaller than previous.

The cyberbit unifont provides additional unicode for soft keyboard input. This provide a simple way of input japanese character (Katakana, Hiragana). You may consider other better input method likes:

        http://www.geocities.com/jsgotangco/jpnIM.htm
        http://www.geocities.com/jsgotangco/nunome.htm

5. Configure Zten

You are now ready to startup Zten, goto Application tab, tap on Zten icon, the program startup with english UI.

First, tap on Setting and select lcfont 12. Qtopia will re-map it to lcfont(monafont) point 11 as its soft linked at Step 3. The same for lcfont 10. For lcfont 16,18,20 and 24, it will map it to lcfont(monafont) point 13.

Next, tap on first small icon on the top icon bar, a Select Books screen will popup, highlight book that under left pane and tap right arrow icon at the middle of the screen to add book to Selected books pane. After your selection, tap OK to close the screen.

You will see a list of your selected book appears under the Book List tab. \'Check\' those book that you will use it to perform the lookup/search.

Now, goto Search tab, enter the word and perform your search.

6. Done.

John,

Thanks for the clear installation instructions with which I have successfully installed zten on my SL-5600 with the original Sharp ROM.

In the midst of installation, I just  need to install the language package qpe-i18n-jp from
http://www.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/handhel...rg/feeds/qpe-x/

Is it possible to install this on a c-series machine?  ZStyle seems to be the hiccup... when I try to install it on my c860, I\'m told that \"shepherd\" version is not supported.

Any way around this problem?  Would appreciate any help.

ahh... correction.  Zstyle seems to be installed in some form or another, as it appears in my Settings tab.  Generates this error, however:

zstyle: error while loading shared libraries: /home/QtPalmtop/lib/libqpe.so.1: undefined symbol: qws_server_display_spec

Anyone have an idea what\'s going on?

You don\'t need Zstyle to run Zten on a Cxx0 machnie - at least I\'ve never installed Zstyle and I\'ve been using Zten since the day I got my Z, but then the Cxx0 already come woth most of the fonts you need to show/write Japanese properly.

Also unismall is REALLY small on the C760 screen, I mean REALY REALLY small, you\'ll get eye strain reading it for more than a few minutes, I prefer the 16 point unifont or LCfont at 14+point

go here for a short howto on installing Zten on the Cxx0 series (with pictures)

ah, this is on the cacko 1.21 sharp-based rom, by the way... not sure if that makes a difference (in that japanese fonts aren\'t installed?).

ahh, I\'m using a hand converted Sharp Rom casue I need the Japanese read/write ability, you\'ll need to reinstall the LC fonts at least as well as the japanese handwriting or fepmon (romanji-]kana-]kanji) applets.

There used to be a Japanese support pack for the old Sash ROM (now relabled Cacko) maybe it\'s still kicking around and will work.

Iqnotes that you download from the author\'s site will NOT save in Japanese, you can write and see japanese but after you save and reopen you get mojibake. There is aproblem in saving uft8 text. There is a fixed version kicking around on the Japanese sites, I\'ll see if I can find the link

Here\'s a Japanese capable version of iqnotes
