New Owner Of Sl-c3100 (need English Os)
« on: January 31, 2006, 06:46:59 pm »
I purchased an SL-C3100 when I was in Tokyo earlier this month.   It came preloaded with the Japanese OS.  I would ike to convert it to an English OS.  I've searched on the web and found an English user's guide, at http://www.triesoft.de, but it appears to be written for an SL-C3100 that has already been converted to English.

I think I'm caught in a chicken-and-egg problem.  I can't read Japanese, so I can't understand the rudimentary Japanese OS commands on the Zaurus to figure out how to configure or load in the appropriate packages to convert to an English OS, but the English Zaurus OS manuals assume that the conversion has already been performed.

Can someone point me to a simple step-by-step guide that bootstraps in an English OS for the SL-C3100, so that I don't feel as if I'm groping inthe dark each time I power it on?

Many thanks,

Fry

Fry,

Think you should re-read TriSoft's guide....

However, if you don't find conversion info there, try looking on conics.net website or search the C3xxx section of these forums.....actually very simple to do the basic conversion....

Also, FWIW, it would have been better to post this in the C3xxx section...

You may want to convert to English first or you may want to skip that and just put the Cacko ROM on it, which is in English and is a much nicer version of the Sharp ROM, IMHO and others too...

Anyway, hope this helps a bit and WELCOME to the club!!

Enjoy your 3100 they're great!

Mark

I looked at the step-by-step instructions at the conics.net website at:

http://downloads.conics.net/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/eng-inst/

but could not really follow it.  The instructions indicate that I should start up a Terminal, become root, and edit a locale configuration file, to switch the display language from Japanese to English.  Unfortunately, I cannot locate the Terminal on any of the directories on the SL-C3100. I think this is the main stumbling block for me: locating  Terminal or installing a Terminal on the SL-C3100.

Thanks.  Sorry for posting in this section. After this thread runs through, I'll refer all furture SL-C3100-related questions to that area. I wasn't aware of it before.

This sounds even better.  I'm afraid I don't know how to go about doing that though.  I hope it is not too difficult.  I'm having trouble just trying to use the Zaurus, because it is not in English.

Many thanks, Mark.  I heard great things about this machine, and hope to make it my daily workhorse.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=113184\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

That URL points to a posting which includes a binary file attachment.  If I understand correctly, that binary image can be transferred to the Zaurus to overwrite its native OS, perhaps by copying it to an SD card and then loading the SD card into the Zaurus. I've never done this before: will I have to get an USB card adapter to attach to my PC, and then copy the contents of that binary file to the SD card?

If so, are there instruction on how to copy the image on the SD card onto the Zaurus file system and have it reboot and load the new OS?

Thanks for any tips.

As Mark indicated above, the Cacko ROM sounds very enticing.  However, I don't have any instructions for how to load it to the Zaurus.  I'm somewhat of a newbie in fiddling around with firmware and devices, but I'd like to try it, if it's not too complicated.

Thanks.  Those instructions seem clear enough. I'm now interested in installing cacko on the Zaurus.  I'll either have to buy an SD card or a CF card.  Is there any reason to prefer one over the other, price-wise or technology-wise?  What type of card or brand do most people buy?  I assume I'll need a USB card reader for the SD or CF card as well. Will any cheapo card-reader that connects to a PC via the USB port work? Thanks.

+ Cheap card reader works for me. (around $10)
+ SD card is needed if you want to stored installed program in SD card. Because normally, zaurus mount/unmount CF card everytime u suspend/wake up and SD card should be in the machine all the time, while CF slot is often used for another card (wifi, bluetooth, camera, lan, etc).
+ I often use CF card to store mp3, transfer file from/to pc (it is in fat partition, we often use ext2 for sd card so it cannot be read by windows pc) and flash image.

To sum up, u should buy a CF card for easy flashing (no need a high capacity card). Im not sure if u need a SD or not because u have a internal hdd in 3100.

I wanted to thank everyone on this thread for all the input and advice.  I downloaded Cacko onto a CF card and flashed the Zaurus.  I'm afraid that the procedure for doing so did not quite correspond to the release notes.  I had to wing it a bit by just executing that commands that seemed to make sense. Eg: There was no option 5 (Flash repartition) as per step 11 of the release notes.  I had to select the 1st option (install new ROM), and simply followed the menus; I also did not get a chance to enter 27 for root partition size as instructed in step 11.

Do the release notes have to be updated?  I downloaded Cacko version 1.23 for the C3100.

In any event, the Zaurus is up and running (I think.  Is there a test to make see if I've made any mistakes), and I am very happy with such a handy device.  Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

Yes, it is runing, and I did flash Cacko. The Zaurus ilooks and runs very nicely.  I've been playing with it a bit, and had it lock up on me only once, when I tried to play an MPEG-2 clip in the Video Player (under Multimedia).  I loaded the clip and switched into full screen; the Video Player took some time to get started, so I double tapped the screen to exit out of full screen mode, and then the Video Player hung.  In fact, the entire Zuarus hung.  I rebooted it by taking out the battery. I've found no other major problems since then.

One final question, for you experienced Zuarus users.  Now that I've got a functioning system, I would like to find out more about its capabilities. Where can I get more information about the Zaurus?

I'm also a little confused about the myriad of OSes available for the C3100 using the Cacko ROM flash?  Is the newly Cacko flashed Zaurus OS running an OS called QTopia? How is it different from the native Japanese Linux-based Zaurus OS (or is the Japanese OS also a QTopia variety)?  How is it different from OpenZaurus?

Now that my Zaurus has been flashed with Cacko, can I still install .ipk packages using the Add/Remove Software (under Settings tab)?  Will those .ipk packages work with the native Japanese OS as well as OpenZaurus?

I really like this little machine.  I'd now like to know more about its capabilities: Backing up and restoring data to the Zaurus, synching it with a PC or Mac, finding useful applications for it, etc?  Where should I go next?
