Openzaurus 3.5.4 Status
« on: February 06, 2006, 10:35:27 am »
I decided to write some words here on forum as it will show progress not only to people who track OpenEmbedded changes or OpenZaurus website but also to others (like Cacko/Watapon/PdaXrom users).

OpenZaurus 3.5.4 will be build by Michael ‘Mickeyl’ Lauer when we resolve all release problems. Decision who will be Release Manager are nearly taken and it looks like I (Marcin ‘Hrw’ Juszkiewicz) will be that person.

There was two testing cycles and now I'm building 3rd one. I got ~100 testers with over 110 Zaurus machines (all models covered). Thx to feedback, bug reporting, patches from OZ testers (and from Familiar team and testers) this release will be best OpenZaurus release ever.

We will use following kernels:
- 2.4.18 on collie (sl-5000/5500), poodle (sl-5600) and tosa (sl-6000)
- 2.4.20 on akita (c1000), borzoi (c3100) and spitz (c3000)
- 2.6.14-rc1 on c7x0 (c700/750/760/860)

All kernels are updated to WE18 so wireless networking in WPA networks should work (OPIE and GPE network settings does not support WPA yet so it has to be done from hand).

We resolved many kernel related problems:
- suspend on right-arrow (collie, poodle, tosa)
- no resume after suspend
- too fast keyboard repeat on c7x0

Many people wonder why at all we are going to release OpenZaurus 3.5.4 with 2.4.20 kernel for Cxx00 instead of going to 2.6 for it. The main reason is that 2.6 support is not widely tested yet - we know that it works on spitz (sl-c3000) or borzoi (sl-c3100) but it was not so tested on akita (sl-c1000). And users have more SD/CF cards and other stuff then we can test for working.

We will provide few types of images:
- officially supported: bootstrap, gpe, opie
- experimental: xfce, e17

After 3.5.4 release we will work on getting current 2.6 kernels for c7x0, cxx00 (c1000/c3000/c3100) usable with 3.5.4 feeds - there is some work to do with it and we did not yet finished all ALSA work. There will be also experimental build with 2.6 kernel for tosa (sl-6000) to get it more tested on user machines.

Fantastic news! and great work!

Any ideas of a rough timeline for release?  ( I know you can't commit to a date right now but any idea? )

In a perfect world we would have 3.5.4 right in time for FOSDEM 2006...

Considering the huge amount of OE/OZ/Familiar hackers present at FOSDEM we could certainly have a hack session to iron out remaining bugs.

When I resolve current problems (home hdd failure, some build problems) then probably will build them.

(Totally gratuitous comment)     The main thing I hated about Open Zaurus when I tried it, and it has always sent me back to Cacko or Sharp ROM is that hotlinks in the email utilities (OpieMail or Sharp email) do not open up in Opera.  I guess there is no way to do that or it would have been done already,  correct?  I can't think of anything else that I really disliked about it except that.  There was a LOT to like about it.

Greetings,

I wanted to give an update from my test on oz 3.5.4 using SL-5600 (Poodle).

1) Opie --  if I cancel out when prompted before opie starts, I do get to a command prompt. If opie starts up, you just get a blank screen and it doesn't continue. Tried tests where I also cleaned out /home of remnants from a different rom (qtopia), neither made difference. Reason I did the above, is I think I saw a quick message that it found some opie environment or something similar and wanted to be sure that I didn't have anything from prev install that wasn't overwritten. I removed any ref to opie and also the /home, and reflashed again subsequently.

2) GPE

  a) Open Zaurus screen
   Init version 2.85 booting
  c) GPE 2.7 powered by open embedded screen (on for about 10 secs)
  d) screen starts to have typing overwriting this screen
  e) touch crosshairs to calibrate (get 5 of these)
  f) now replaced by black x on blank screen,
  g) using stylus over the x doesn't do anything, you can move the x across the screen but it also returns to the center after letting go.
 h) no subsequent screen starts up.

3) Bootstrap - didn't test this one out as I wanted a gui version.

All tested after regular rom update, standard procedure etc. Successful kernel, ro file system and flash erased, and then reset. Used very recent images from early February 2006.

Thanks
Greg

I'm running GPE test-2 on my poodle right now. For me, no real problems so far, except a few observations/questions:

 - no /home/root directory created. Not a big problem for gpe, exept when su'ing to root (error can't cd to home dir) or tryiing to run gpe as root.

- when I tried to change the colour settings gpe locks up. Is there a better way to reset it other than to stop & start using /etc/init.d/gpe-dm?

- IMHO the default background should be set to a gradient. With the default colour & set to sold, the icon text isn't readable.

- is there anyway to set gpe so it doesn't suspend when plugged into ac power?

- the default /etc/ipkg.conf doesn't have any src's in it. Is this intentional?

- is there any way to reboot other than issuing a reoobt command in the root term?

thks
GROG!

I also noticed that my sd card isn't inserted until after I reboot. Even running '/etc/sdcontrol insert' in the root shell doesn't work. After a reboot, all's well.

kill X with ctrl-alt-bs (two jap keys next to spacebar) till you get a login prompt, login as root and do

Code: [Select]
rm /usr/bin/keylaunch
/etc/init.d/gpe-dm start

that will make it work as expected
