Linux to 5600 sync success... (kind of)
« on: February 18, 2004, 01:53:38 pm »
Here is my solution(s) to linking the 5600 to a Linux box. OpenZaurus is not yet stable enough for the 5600.

This is what I\'ve done:

1) The key is getting my SuSE Linux box mounting my Z via samba.  This gives my Linux box almost full access to the Z (CF,CD and memory).  This link gets you started

http://www.ossh.com/zaurus/mirrors/docs.za...ers_howto.shtml

2) Calendar: I use the great KO/PI package found here;

http://www.pi-sync.net/html/_latest_ko_pi.html

I like the calendar package much better then the built-in one.

Then I use Korganizer on the Linux side. When I launch Korganizer I point the it to the calendar file on the Z!

While in Korganizer I also periodically merge to a local copy of the calendar so I have access to it while the Z is not connected.

3) Address book: I use opieaddressbook which saves the addresses in the old xml format. A version of OpieAddressbook can also be found here:

http://www.pi-sync.net/html/_latest_ko_pi.html

On  the linux side I use QtopiaDesltop which can be found here:

http://www.trolltech.com/download/qtopia/

Since the desktop can not sync with the Z! I then use rsync on the linux side to sync with the two commands:

rsync -zurv ~/Zmnt/Z/Applications/addressbook /home/ds/.palmtopcenter

rsync -zurv /home/ds/.palmtopcenter/addressbook ~/Zmnt/Z/Applications

4) Backup: I just use rsync to save changes to my linux box

Hope the helps,

dsurim,

Since you\'re doing all of that, you may want to take a look at how I set up auto-rsync on this thread in General:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...iewtopic&t=1898

I\'m running SuSE 9 with KDE 3.1.x, and the older Korganizer 3.1.1 on the desktop.  I\'ve resisted syncing with the 3.2 KO ics file from the Z so far.  I did use my desktop ics file as a seed for the Z\'s KO.  The one time I tried a sync, it popped up EVERY event and I can to just patiently go through and cancel them all.  I\'m not relishing the idea of doing it again on the desktop side.

Which version of KO are you running on the desktop?

For anyone who wants a quick way to connect the SL-5600 to a Linux box without the manual configuration, I\'ve modified the zaurus_check scripts by Flavio Gargiulo. Zaurus Check 5600 can be downloaded from http://www.design-wave.com/files/zaurus_ch...5600-1.0.tar.gz.

What will this script actually do?  The README states it will start Konqueror with samba, but is that just for file browsing?  Will this assist in dsturium\'s method of syncing with linux?

There\'s an even better way than all of that.

It\'s called Unison.  There\'s graphical and commandline versions for the linux desktop (end every other major OS) and an IPK for the Zaurus.

You can use it to sync flawlessly back and forth between KoPi and Korganizer on the desktop.  WAY easier than rsync or samba or anything else.  Heck, it works better than Qtopia Desktop in a lot of respects.

It basically just lets you do file browsing, but it lets you get a connection between your Z and a linux box with greater ease assisting with step one in dsturium\'s method. With these scripts, you shouldn\'t need to mess with the usb.handmap file, creating an ifcfg file for the usb connection, etc.

I was so happy to see zaurus_check and optimistic that it would work for me.  I downloaded and installed, but can't get it to work.  I manually configured my network settings - giving my zaurus the address 198.168.129.201 and my linux box is 198.168.129.200.  I checked the /etc/hosts file on the zaurus, and it didn't have any hosts in it, so I added them.

zaurus_check starts faithfully each time I put the zaurus in the cradle, but my pc still can't connect to it.

I have a SL-5500 with the Sharp ROM upgraded to v3.10.  The network interfaces that are available in the upgrade don't include a USB interface like the 2.38 ROM does.  It seems to be looking for TCP/IP with an ethernet card, not for USB.

Has anybody else gotten this configuration to work?

Thanks!
Sherilyn
