Openzaurus 3.5.4.1 Testing
« Reply #150 on: May 29, 2006, 02:25:24 pm »
Hi there all

I just flashed the Akita version of the Fourth release candidate of OpenZaurus 3.5.4.1 and I set the NAND memory at 60mb and 121mb (the max) and used the OPIE image.

It looks great, but OMG is SOOOOO slow. Tediously slow infact. The "start" menu took ages to come up, apps took ages to load, everything was so sluggish.

What setting could I have set wrong?

On another note the Hentges GPE image was quick and fast and responsive on the same device.

Do you have a sizable sd card & the doc tab enabled? If so, try turning the doc tab off (I foud that to be one of the more annoying things with opie). hth

1GB SD Card and yes Doc Tab enabled

Why should that cripple the whole system??

My experience has been that the doctab implementation was (is?) very buggy. It never worked for me, and yes, would 'cripple the whole system', at least while it was initailly loading. That was my experience. Turn off the doc tab & see it it helps.

(** DISCLAIMER ** this is coming from someone who hasn't used the latest 3.5.4. image for OPIE that much, so my opinion is based mainly on 3.5.3)

From what I remember, this is because it's (Opie) single threaded and so while it scans large media, nothing else happens.

And this happens continuously? Opie was slow for ages. Surely it should scan the media and then stop scanning them and things should move on?

when you flash various roms, how do you make sure no litter from a previous flash is left in memory somewhere?

Isn't there a way to wipe clean the whole entire system memory before you try a new rom? that way there are no ghosts from other roms.

No, nothing built into the updater.sh if that's what you mean.

The argument is that /home is quite important, and we don't want people to accidentally delete their files, just because they're flashing a new image.

You ought to be able to remove /home/* either before or after the install and it will re-create what's needed.

Si

P.S. I wonder what happens if there's no home directory for a user though...? Be careful before removing the /home/root directory itself.

A completely different question:

Is it possible to install OZ to an SD card instead of the internal microdrive on a 3100?  I realize we could turn this into a "why the hell would you want to do that?" sort of discussion.  Let's say i'd rather use the higher transfer rates of the internal drive for multimedia and other stuff... or i'm just curious.

Can it be done? if so, how?

Sure, you just need a kernel that has 'root=/dev/mmcblk0p1' in the CONFIG_CMDLINE, a one line change in the defconfig. I've been using that on my c700 for some months now, the c3100 isn't different in that regard.
