Note: this is not a flame, I'm interested to know the answers that's all.

Also keep in mind the flash is much slower than the microdrive. Using the microdrive gives quite a performance gain.
how so? I've seen quite a number of post stating that  3100 has more internal flash and that it makes it more responsive during suspend resume. Where is the performance gain?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=120268\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

During suspend/resume you might see a speed up since flash doesn't have to spin up the platter, but for regular operations:
 * NAND isn't what I'd call fast, especially when writing stuff
 * the zlib (de)compression needed for jffs2 is quite expensive on ARM cpus

You could do a 'time dd if=<bigfile> of=/dev/null' with cold cache to have some crude benchmarks.
I'm running root-on-sd (and /home on flash) on my c700 and h2210 and applications launch faster than when running on flash.

[qoute]
What kernel limitations are you talking about?
Thc has built a pdaxrom version using 2.4 kernel and / on the micro-hd
[/qoute]

Yes but he still has to mount the flash as / then piviot root into it, 2.6 boots then mounts the micro drive as /, however the initrd to do this is part of the kernel itself and the kernel is stored in flash

basically on open zaurus you can do whatever you want with the flash, including mounting and using it as storage, but its not as simple as it sounds

nand vs micro drive, nand will be faster, however my zaurus is very nice and fast, comes back up instantly, but i am using the boot strap image (no opie/gpe only good old /dev/tty)

i like not having a small / filesystem and using the microdrive is acceptable, it works - im happy

No initrd needed, even better: it doesn't use an initrd at all!

The default settings for audio-output on my Zaurus C3100 seems a bit strange. To enable support for headphones I need to play around with alsamixer. Otherwise all audio is played through the built-in speaker, even if I have plugged in headphones.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to enable headphone sensing by default?

Which settings did you change to which value exactly?

Using alsamixer, I had to change "Jack Function" to Headphone and "Speaker Function" to Off, otherwise audio would play from both the speaker, and the headphones. However, I can't seem to reproduce the error when I try to revert back to the old settings, so I'm guessing maybe it was something temporary.
Has anyone else encountered similar problems?

Bug 1582
Quote
when running gpe-conf network as a 'normal user' (not root), the applet asks for
root password but after making changes the applet will complain "No write access
to network configuration".

So network access modifications must be done as 'root'.

Congrats to the OZ team on OZ.3.5.4.1!

Just installed it on my 3100 with 2.6 kernel and installed went well and OZ/GPE looks great!

This is my first OZ install and so far impressed overall. As others have said, it feels very responsive and quick! Was recently using pdaXrom and Cacko/X/Qt/Debian before that as comparisons....

Have only noticed a few things so far....these are just my thoughts/reactions to what I'm discovering as I browse around OZ/GPE.....

1) mini-browser

A. Works OK overall, but is there way to organize bookmarks into folders?
B. Has crashed one time, when I clicked on 'Add Reply' button in OESF forums.
C. Can't tab through input fields. For example, when you login to forums...

2) Package Manager

A. Works, but seems a bit odd compared to using pdaXrom's or Synaptic package manager.

Specifically, those other package managers have the package info column shown by default. Very useful for noobs like me to know what you want to install. I did find the menu option for showing info, but would like a default option for showing info on all the listed packages.

B. Tried installing several packages, but I get various error message at some point during install process. Not sure why this happens. Have updated package lists...

3) Windows

Why isn't there a minimize/expand window button on each window? Although I have found the 'upside-down ^' in the upper left corner of windows....

4) Calendar

Seems odd that there are no menus, just a few buttons across top...or am I missing something??

Again, overall, very impressed with this ROM!

Happy to make a contribution to the OZ team....however, need to do this with PayPal.....so who should I donate to??

Thanks,

Mark

About 'popping' - by default no USB drivers are loaded. Use 'Settings/USB settings' (or how it was called on GPE) to select which USB Client functionality you want to have enabled.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=119524\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

this seems like not working but modprobe g_ether (for usbnet)  or g_file_storage (for usb mass storage) works

so far so good
I like 3.5.4.1-alpha! much better than SharpROM
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=119749\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hmmm... about g_file_storage, I've tried and use it "manually", i.e. without gpe-conf, and it was not a success at all on my akita/gpe

first umounted /media/cf
then :
modprobe g_file_storage file=/dev/hda1

Resulted in a recognition of the USB device by the desktop, but lots of errors appeared.

Log from the desktop :
Code: [Select]

Would have done the same for Hrw, but he doesn't have PayPal unfortunately...

And I will probably never create Paypal account - they do not support Poland. And thats why I choosed Moneybookers. But if you want to help.. all my SD cards are not working under 2.6 kernel ;(

And we need to clean up developers list and update it to current status. Kergoth is MIA, Cwiiis is working on 'poky' rather then on OpenZaurus.

We got few new developers - like Patrick '_law_' Steiner which got 'collie' which was offered to me some time ago - he will work on improving GPE on collie. There are few OpenEmbedded developers which use Zaurus machines with OpenZaurus devel or Angstrom devel - their contributions to OE helps too.

There is a few outside developers which help us to get 2.6 kernel working better on Zauruses - things like ALSA sound cannot be made so quickly without Liam Girdwood.

And many things in OpenZaurus 3.5.4 feeds are possible because work of NSLU-Linux people, Familiar team etc.. etc.. etc.

You mean I just PP'd Kergoth for nothing????

Yipes, sounds like I'll need to take on another job, to support the whole family now....

Meanwhile, have noticed one more thing not working right, can't seem to suspend my 3100....

Thanks,

UPDATE:

I've just tried connecting to my WiFi network at home and have problem connecting to it.

While the WiFi monitor says that it sees my network (Quality 90%, Level 211dBm, Noise 150 dBm) and I've entered my WEP password, when I click the OK button I get the following error message:

"Error

No write access to Network Configuration"

Why do I get this message, I successfully entered my password when asked to gain access to the Network Setup app?

Any suggestions??

FWIW, I have successfully connected online today using my Socket Ethernet card while at my office today....however, just tried connecting using Socket Ethernet card at home and doesn't work for some reason...

Would like to be able to use my Ambicom WiFi card or the Socket Ethernet card at home....

Meanwhile, good news as far as the 'Suspend' issue...now it works!!

Thanks for any help!

Mark
