Backup Options?
« on: March 25, 2006, 03:00:31 pm »
I have read and re-read Meanie's description and still I'm unsure about backup. Maybe part of the problem is that he assumes Sharp ROM rather than Cacko, assumes automounter is available, assumes C3100 rather than C1000, etc. So I have some questions.

1) Apparently, the options available are NAND and the Qt backup application. Any other? I assume something is available at the command line but since nobody talks about it, it must be less useful or more difficult? Also I noticed Meanie says the Z can be hooked to a PC as a client device with the USB cable but that is "buggy", which makes it kinda useless if you want to rely on the backup. And apparently there is one other option using a network connection. Do either of these two latter options allow access to the entire NAND image, or are they again just the user partition that can be backed up?

2) Difference between NAND and Qt backup? I understand NAND backs up the entire internal flash including such things as partition information as an image. This indicates to me it would be a pretty good way to go because so complete; however it is fussy to actually do (fiddling with batteries, etc.) so my guess is folks use it infrequently. Qt backup on the other hand gives me only /home on a C1000, so is less complete? No partition info, things like that? No /root? I'm guessing what gets backed up is everything in the 96MB user partition?

3) Can I do either NAND or Qt backup or any other kind of backup to an external USB hard drive (using Z as the host)? Apparently no. Maybe backup to SD card, then just copy the file to the external disk? Looks like realistically, everything has to go to or through an SD or CF card.

4) With the Qt backup Meanie has a procedure to umount loop devices using his automounter. Seems like Cacko 1.23 has some sort of automounter (SD gets mounted automatically when inserted) but not Meanie's automounter of course; is there a corresponding procedure for that? I have "/dev/loop0 on /usr type squashfs", is that the sort of loop device that needs removing? Should I just use umount?

Anyone can help me with these questions? I'd appreciate it...
