Does The Sl-3200 Look Ugly?
« on: March 27, 2006, 12:57:24 am »
When I first saw the photos of the SL-3200 first reaction was, that two tone keyboard looks a bit ugly.   I think the 3100 is the best looking one so far even thou when I first saw it online I thought that was ugly too until I got it.

Who else thinks the 3200 looks a bit odd at first?

me!!! For me the C3000 was the best design, c3200 worst. IMO 2 colours on the keyboard look odd, and the red accents...not for me. I'm surprised trisoft doesn't have the C3200 yet, I saw a couple of days ago kd85 has it in stock , I want another zaurus but the design is not my taste... decisions decisions...

we have them since beginning of last week.
But also this Zaurus has to go through all the needed testing
and procedures before it's allowed to sell it in the EU market.
We hope to have this process finished in record time and then
we will start selling the new model.

It's styling looks like something from 1982!  Reminds me of a TI-99/4a or maybe even a TRS-80.

Out of curiosity, how is the ROHS regulation applying to the Zaurus - given that it's a consumer product and therefore, by July, will have to comply as I understand it? I would *guess* that Sharp as a global manufacturer will make all its products "lead-free", but given that they clearly intend to never sell Z's outside of Japan for an indefinite period (despite the 3000 having an FCC mark), they might choose not to bother?

*IF* the Z will not pass ROHS compliance, does that mean it will become much harder to sell them in Europe and all EU users would have to do a personal import from Japan? I am concerned about this and the future of portable linux computing in UK and EU.

That is a remarkably good price.  Way to go guys, for supporting the European embedded Linux market.  I wish there were more companies in the US that were as proactive as you (Dynamix, with their ridiculously high "support" premiums, don't count).

I think it looks beautiful.

My favorite aesthetically (size, shape, mass, color pattern and layout)
is still the SL-C700, but the C3200 is close.  Maybe even better.

C700 still wins on size, and weight though.

Just got mine a few days ago and I really like the way it looks, I like the silver lid better than the black of my C1K

I like the Akita I currently have ... why? It looks somewhat similar to my Averatec notebook with a dark colored top lid and silver sides.

But I've never seen other clamshells in person, so I cannot really tell.

So far, I've been impressed with SHARP hardware, collie and Akita. Both have very solid feel to it. Reminds me of Germany precision engineer when I tested a VW Golf years back.

One thing that really annoys me is that my new C3100 has blue key descriptions on the black keyboard foil. I sometimes work in the dark, and then these key labels are almost invisible (Copy, Paste, ;, :, * etc.)
The C3000 was much better in that respect.

What about the C3200?

I've seriously considered building a combined C3000 / C3100 in order to combine the advantages. But what to do with the remaining parts? Not well sellable probably. ;-)

sorry, but this part of the keyboard is identical between the
3100 and the 3200 model.
Have a look at it here (SL-C3200):
