2gb And Up Sd Cards Supported
« Reply #120 on: September 06, 2006, 07:53:23 am »
Maybe the FS type is not recognized correctly or the card is partitioned in an odd way.

Please try the following:

Code: [Select]
fdisk /dev/mmcda
then hit p to print the partition table. What does it say?
Try removing existing partition(s) and creating on ebig new partition with FS type 83 (Linux).
Then mkfs.ext2 /dev/mcda1

Does that work?

Is the card mounted correctly afterwards?

If yes, then re-type the partition to Windows95 (FAT32) instead of Linux (ext2) in fdisk and create an FAT32 FS with
mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/mmcda1

Does it still work correctly?

Good luck

That worked great!!!!!  .

The partition was reading unknown.  Once I deleted it and recreated it as per your instructions all is working well.  4GB!!!!!!!!!!!

I definately learned some basic stuff today.  Thanks Daniel for commands, thanks Cresho for the drivers and the SNES emulators, and thanks Meanie for the pdaXqtrom.  You guys are awesome.

fat16 works better on the z especially if you want to be doing nand restore from your sd card

if you are going to stick with fat32, use fat32(LBA).  But for restore purpouses, use fat16(LBA).

hmm.. come to think of it, I think that's the reason why my 4gb failed.  Probably not supported.  Anyway, stick with fat32 but if you ever need to do a nand backup or restore, just for your information, it will only work on a card with fat16 (LBA).  I use a 2gb at the moment.

Yea, I have a 4GB Transcend 150x SD card.  I first had it formatted FAT16, then reformatted it ext2 so I can keep files on there and not have the system complain about symlinks on a FAT formatted card.

Also, if you havent' read my other posts in this thread, beware that the default graphical Package Manager shipped with Cacko (maybe some others out there too) complain about the 4GB single partition.  Seems they don't want to play well with partitions that size.  Size down to 2GB or 1GB if you want to use the graphical installer.

Ipkg command line will install to the 4GB partition no problem.

That was one of the "Gotcha!"'s that I noticed when I first got the card.

I am glad to report that I've finally got this to work on a Transcend 2GB 80X mini-sd card (TS2GSDM80). Why mini-sd? Because it's for my phone.

When I first tried the driver I couldn't get it to work so reverted back to the standard one. After much experimentation I found that the adapter that came with one of the mini-sd cards was broken: the symptom being that when inserted into a device (tried my Z and my wince) it would eat the cpu for a good half-minute or so then ignore the card. After swapping to a different adapter the Z sees the card and I was able to copy a bunch of stuff over.

NB this card is for my phone so I won't be doing any long-term stress testing on it (it will be used now and again for copying files back and forth between the Z & phone) so please don't make any buying decisions based on my info (at least don't blame it on me if you do and something goes wrong ).

Cresho: I think it'll be a good idea to have a list of tested and "seem to be working" cards listed at the beginning of the thread (or somewhere easily accessible - wiki?) so people don't have to trawl through the thread looking for that info. Want to volunteer?

I tried the Fat32 first but then noticed that my Windows box and my Linux box didn't recognize the card when used with a card reader.  So I then used fat32 LBA but still got the same thing.  Since I could use the 1000 as a card reader I'm thinking of repartitioning to ext2 so I could use the seperate card reader for the linux box and connect thru the Z for windows pc's.  I'll let you know what happens.

Or you can format it ext2 and install this ext2 driver on your windows xp box.

just a few notes for you guys...
After repartitioning and formating my 2gb in the zaurus, windows will not recognize the 2gb when i usb connect it to the windows box.  But when i use my mustek dv4500 as a usb drive with the same 2gb sd card i formated, windows finds it automatically.  So i then decided to format the card through my mustek with the 2gb again to fat16 and now windows sees it in my zaurus.  What a maze-athon!

The Z seems to share the SD card with windows at the byte level - so for windows to see it it must be formatted with FAT/VFAT. I have partitioned my SD into a VFAT partion which windows can see over USB and an ext2 partition for proper Linux stuff.

Did this put a small partition in front of and at the end of the SD card.  I'm curious if I would have to do that.  I'm still having little quirks with my card.    I just read up Meanie's site about syncing and delaying the umount process for cards that are 4gb and higher.  For some reason my SD card was unable to write with the zaurus user even though I had given 777 permissions from root.  I just redid the whole partition so hopefully it would work fine.

Just installed the driver last night and my Ridata 4GB SD worked perfect. all day then I took it out tonight to put more stuff on it through my laptop's SD card adapter. I put it back in and the Z can't see it. My laptop and digicam can still see it however. It's just dead to the Z.

I'm running C1000, Cacko 1.23
I even reinstalled the driver but it hasn't helped. Also rebooted in case.

Any ideas?

I dunno why this is, but I reformatted with my digicam and it works again. I dont know if I would've gotten the same effect if I reformatted with laptop or the Z.. I know it's ideal to reformat with the Z to use with the Z, but I really want to be able to use this same card for my digicam too.

Be carefull with which sd cards you use.  SD cards are unstable wo the z but a few.  I remember back when the sl-5500 was having a heart attack over a sandisk 125mb.  Then i purchased a 1gb PNY and has not given me any problems at all.  SD cards are hard to come by when it comes to stability.

I recommend you stick with a 2gb PNY or Patriot.  My 4b Patriot was working fine till it died after 2 weeks of usage....just some examples.
