3.5.4/gpe Problems And Good Bits
« on: March 30, 2006, 06:37:10 pm »
Ok:

1. gomunicator still won't fricken work >.<

2. the supposed USB "Storage" mode resets back to Usb ethernet when I close the USB settings window.

3. No FileManager as standard (AT ALL!), or even the libraries to install it.

4. No INIT (What the. . ?)

5. No nice-and-easy Reboot button

6. No SD card Mount/Unmount applet.

7. Network setup applet doesn't recognise CF Serial Modem (installed on /dev/ttyS3)

8. No Cardctl

9. You can't select which side Panel Icons sit on.

10. Programs that are running don't show up on the taskbar

So nothing particularly terrible, apart from init, netsetup applet, unmounter and cardctl. .  How come there's no init or cardctl? That's insane!

I miss my QT, and am trying to find the odds and ends to let me reflash, but it's got potential, even if it's currently useless to me. XD

The login manager is great, the sharp rom barely even has one after all.
The general desktop interface is an imporvement, although I sortof miss the tabs, especially the file browser tab.
Supports additional features that the sharp rom doesn't, even if none of them work on my PDA.

You wanna be a real geek? use GPE. I just can;t afford the time right now to fiddle.

use 'su -' instead of 'su' to become root, or use the 'root terminal'. If you don't you won't have sbin in $PATH. You can 'ipkg install matchbox-applet-cards' to get an unmounter applet

Not installed in the default ROM, but installable & quite usable.

5. No nice-and-easy Reboot button

Agreed

mmm. Haven't had time to try mine. I'll have to take a look.

8. No Cardctl
What about 'cardctl' in the Root Shell?

9. You can't select which side Panel Icons sit on.
True

10. Programs that are running don't show up on the taskbar
That's true as well. They're placed in the 'Active Tasks' folder. Just works differently. You get used to it .

If that's the Doc Tab you're referring to, I say good riddance. Never worked for me.

I'd be interested in an applet that shows the running tasks on the taskbar (though there's not much room in truth), or at least gives a list if you tap on something.

Fun little programming task for someone?

Seems to be available in .dev, but I cannot bitbake it in oz354x... Is it stable enough for inclusion in .oz354x ?

If yes... may be time to merge ?

tried "ipkg update;ipkg install matchbox-applet-cards"?

Read "3.5.4.x upgrades" thread from time to time.

Is anyone having things lock up on the 5500? I just updated from the 3.5.4RC/OPIE, and I like GPE better, but it keeps locking up. I've noticed it especially after using the rosetta trainer, and getting it all worked out. When I try to save the database, it locks up. Then I have to reset it, and I lose the database anyway. Suggestions?
