Cacko 1.23b1 On C3000 Unstable Issue
« on: March 31, 2006, 12:38:20 am »
Just recovery from my recent HDD1 error, then I tried to switch to Cacko, since it provides more features and better English support. But I have found some problems on my Z, which was never happen previously on Sharp 1.0 Rom.
1. SD driver issue, I have put one SD card formatted as swap, thus I can use swapon directly to enable it, but in the driver initialization, it will print lots of cmd status lines, it seems to be harmless, but it's annoying.

2. Unknown hang issue, this happened one or two times, I cannot describe precisely, it seems to be: a) I installed some software, and try to run it. It switched to the so called "magnify" mode, then it hangs, this happened when I installed the qpdf 2.30 against qpdf 2.21 without uninstalling it in command line using ipkg, then I can do nothing but remove the battery and place it back.  I was playing video with Kino, plug my headphone into the socket, it hangs again.

3. Unknown repeat restart QPE: I installed some software or run the vnc server on the Z, then when I clicked on the suspend button, the QPE will quit and showing it was couting in restarting QPE, then it will go to the state on and on, never finish.

I'm not sure whether this kind of issue is common or not, maybe there are some problems with my microdrive, I suspect this may be the root cause, since previously, it has been quite stable for 6 months.

Any comments or help? Thanks.

1: Yes, these driver initialiation error messages are normal (something like "no responce" or simlar during boot time, rihgt?)

2: With wrong magnify settings, I also had hangs.
After installing a program, I usually immediately go to the icon and check wether there is a magnify checkbox and if it's checked. Then I uncheck it. With that I don't have such hangs anymore. B: I have also seen a few hangs when playing video, since I don't use the Z as a video player anymore (I don't need a video player, it would only be a fun thing). However, some apperant hangs actually are no hangs. Try to press the cance (X) button. This recovers from some "hangs", or try Shift-Home (task-switching) or try to bring up the menu with "Menu"...

3: I have never seen THAT behavior, but I have encountered several (not looped) unforeseen QTopia restarts before. usually when installing bad IPKs or when I checked / unchecked a tray library accidentally (the little blue dot in the system tray). This not even asks before it restarts QTopia!

Cacko ROM has it's small problems, but once I knew them I could live with them.
It's still a beta version...
Will we get a better version any time? :-)

I have tried pdaXrom, and although the look and feel is very nice and it has many advantages over any QTopia-based ROM, it has still so many problems that I decided not to continue with it.
Maybe these problems could be solved by some 10 hours invested in tweaking it, but I don't have that time.
So Cacko is in my opinion still the best option for the C3000.

In fact, Sharp's rom seems to be the most useful and stable one. While Cacko provide the powerful features that the Sharp rom lacks while introduce some unstablity issues.
I have played several ROMs when I was having my first SL-5500, after tried others, I turned back to Sharp rom.
I was also thinking to have a try with pdaXrom, but not so sure of my time investment.
At present, Cacko seems to be OK, I won't waste my time trying others.
I believe I will have the same decision as you.
Thanks for your comments!
Wow, just noticed you had 2 SL-C3000.

I always feel very uncomfortable having only one electronic brain. I always need a backup. And a few days ago I learned the hard ware that I NEED a backup machine.

Additionally, a second machine lets me play with new software or other ROMs while keeping the main one stable and untouched.

With my recent experiences, I decided to use always the backup machine to try new critical software first, before I install it on the main unit.

This is correct, and harmless.

The "magnified" mode, aka 320x240 is buggy on Cacko3k. (Cacko for the 3000 isn't really Cacko 1.23. I call it Cacko3k to differentiate the two)

There are a couple of things that seem to cause this, but we never got the exact circumstances down.

All the issues you mentioned are known issues. Cacko3k was developed by a forum member before Maslovsky started work on Cacko 1.23 for the C1000. That member has since dropped the project, but it was apparently handed off to another member who promised to keep working on it. Unfortunately, I don't know who that is or what the current status is.

I suspect a new version will be a while, if ever, because a work around has to be set up for the limited flash memory in the 3000.
