Cacko 1.24?

I was getting a little scared that Anton might have fell off..... Because of that I'm skipping lunch today and donating that budgeted $5 to his paypal account.... Come on guys if you don't develop like me but you still depend on him for developing cool stuff you have to give something up.... a great thank you will only go so far..... just my 2 cents....

$5 might not be alot but if 20 people do it than that'll give him something to work with.... maybe a night on the town with his partner to make up for the time he taking away coding stuff.

1.23 worked practically without fault (except a few device drivers, where I imagine he didn't have the hardware to test), so in a sense it's "finished". maybe he'll port it to the 6000, or even the HTC universal.

however, I hope there will be a 1.24 or even a 2.00 depending on what happens to Qt/e & Qtopia .

Perhaps Trolltech will release some of the phone apps as GPL so we can use them on Zaurus with bluetooth phones or gsm/gprs adaptors like Audiovox or Enfora.

I'd definitely be willing to contribute to a Cacko upgrade.  Maybe Anton can chime in and let us know whether he plans to put out a 1.24 or 2.0 version.

My C1000 should arrive within the next 2-3 days and I will definitely be flashing it with Cacko.  If Anton has no further plans to upgrade, I am really liking what is going on in the OZ camp.

you miss the whole point of Cacko - it's Sharp compatible, meaning all the standard Sharp software runs on it, but

* the kernel is the same version as Sharp and so is 100% compatible, and Anton has back-ported updates and drivers in later 2.4.x kernels to improve stability and add hardware compatibility
* it's QT/Qtopia based because that's what Sharp requires, with many of the original Sharp built-ins replaced with newer/better versions
* the best of all the different versions of Sharp software released for all zauruses has been harvested, fixed up, cleaned up and put into packages for easy installation

Thus an E17 + kernel 2.6 would be an entirely different distribution and of no interest to the people who chose to use Cacko.

If you want bleeding edge kernels, and are willing to dive in and tweak the system, then OZ is where you want to go. If you want a "it works without fuss" PDA with internet features then Cacko is ideal.

I just want to thank Anton for all the work he is doing for us Zaurus users. My c760 has become a great tool for me thanks to Cacko rom. I hope i can donate 10$ to you in the next days.

Just gotta say, I don't think that is true.  There are a few things that "came back" with cacko that were not on my 3100 rom.  These things were on my old 5600 and I was happy for the change in the new 3100 roms.  So I think cacko still uses some older stuff.

I would guess then it depends on what Anton is able to get hold of. I'm sure he would be happy to receive updated packages from the 3200 people with the latest Sharp apps in them. I presume you contacted him with the packages you'd like to be updated and offered to test the results?

Most of the issues I had were with the OS its self and not with any particular app except maybe the netmon app.

I posted many times in his threads about the various problems but he never ever responded to any of my posts.  I'm willing to test anything he releases and offer any help I can but it seems to me that he doesn't care.

One simple thing I can think of is to remove that custom screensaver as it messes with the proper power settings in the zaurus.  But I really don't think he cares.  I gave up and went back to the original sharp rom.

Make that qtopia4, qt/embedded 4 doesn't exist due to that marketing trick *cough*. qtopia core 4 is gpl'ed at least.

You dont have to believe the reasons why Trolltech hasn't released Qtopia (besides Qtopia Core) under the GPL. But if you would dig a bit deeper into the phone industry, you might find out it's not just excuses. Among other things, why do you think there are only installable java apps for phones? It's because operators are paranoid (with good measure) that someone could wreak havok on their private and highly regulated networks.

In this aspect I would agree with lpotter... the phone system is designed to work with very thin clients (phones), and the security of the system relies on a fairly thin layer of security provided by the SIM card and it locking down the keys to access the network.

The phone systems were designed with very little, or no, internal security, and this legacy has haunted the operators. Here's an interesting article:

That said, Trolltech are squeezed between Microsoft's WinCE, Symbian and the various proprietary tookits, and I know from experience that selling developer licences for software is tough, especially if you want to have customers in countries such as China where respect for any intellectual property is weak.

Im running cacko full 1.23 and I was wondering if a 1.24 will ever be released.
Some softwares have updates and it would be cool to have them directly inside the distrib
