I dunno if this is the right forum for this post but I made this on the Nokia 770 forum and I thought I'd post here to get an idea of the thoughts of others on what their dream machine would be.
We can start with the
Nexio XP30 by Samsung, since this is what I used as a reference in the original post. For those unfamiliar, it was one of the units Nokia had looked at for inspiration when designing the 770. It has similar architecture to the Zaurus line and could be a good direction for Sharp to go in for some aspects of the Zaurus' design - specifically, the integrated wireless, WVGA display at 5-inches etc.
With that said, if I had to improve on the Nexio design as a base for a future linux based
.arm handheld, this is what I would do:
-Change to a Intel PXA270 at 300MHz (for best balance between longer battery life and decent performance)
-Include 16GB internal Flash (I should be getting that from Samsung for that price anyway. NAND flash is dirt cheap now compared to two years ago, you just wouldn't think that with the prices we pay at the store.)
-256MB DDR DRAM
-Same size and form factor and screen size and resolution
-Built-in BT2.0+EDR
-Built-in 802.11b/g
-Improve the screen so it can be read outdoors (the current screen is horrible)
-Internal 3000mAh battery and 8800mAh external battery
-USB 2.0 Host (an upgrade from the USB1.1 Host)
-Apart from the CF slot, an SD I/O slot
-Discard the PCMCIA adapter support noone needs it.
-Built-in 3MP camera
-Standard 3.5mm stereo headphone jack rather than the 2.5mm crap it has currently
-Keep the built-in mic and speaker
-Keep VGA out
-Change the the Framebuffer chipset from the Epson (awful graphics) to the nVidia
goForce 5500 with an 8MB Video memory or Intel 2700G with 16MB Video memory
-Run linux on it, (Maemo, OpenEmbedded...)
Of course if this was done using the Zaurus C1000 as a base it would be:
-Keep that PXA270 @ 416MHz
-Include 16GB of internal NAND
FLASH... (spinning HDDs are still a bad idea in a mobile device)
-256MB DDR SDRAM
-Same size and form factor with keyboard as usual but change to a 4-inch+ WVGA display (like the Nokia 770's). It can be done in the same form factor (my photoshop edited image attached illustrates Sharp's waste of valuable real-estate in the display area)
-Integrated 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
-Internal 4000mAH battery
-USB 2.0 Host (an upgrade from the USB1.1 Host) with mini-A connector
-SD I/O support
-Integrated 3MP camera
-Built-in Mic and Speaker
-VGA out

Wow! fewer changes with the Zaurus... hmmm.
Of course we all know Sharp's and Samsung's engineers don't care what the west has to say and they won't even ever look at this post, but if Nokia's engineers were to build the above described monster... (hint, hint ).
