SOCKET AND SYMBOL WIFI
« on: February 23, 2004, 05:39:09 pm »
Hi
I just ordered my 5600 from amazon.  when i get it ill post if its the pxa255.
My question is now i got to buy a wifi card.
Im looking for low power and cheap.
I have seen the Symbol wifi on ebay for $30
and the Socket wifi on amazon for $80
I have heard that they are the same card, is this true?  Why the price difference?
So basicly what should i buy for the under $50 price range that wont drain the battery.

I have SEARCHED the forums and have found no answer.

thanks
justin

SOCKET AND SYMBOL WIFI

I have both on the 5600.  Both worked fine with the Sharp 3.3 ROM.  No additional driver needed. They are clearly physically identical.  The socket stoped working so i ordered the $30 symbol.  Then I noticed that if i bent the socket slightly forward it would work again.    Morale, don\'t carry either in your pocket while attached to the Z.  If anything i can browse using Opera 7 faster with the symbol.  Perhaps it has newer firmware.  I am also guessing that their is a glut of the possibly d/ced symbol due to the shift of PDAs away from CF towards SDIO.

Speculation aside there have been many posts about how a $30 symbol is a raging buy. Hope this helps.

You know the joke, pick any two: good, low power, cheap...

Low power cards command a premium...

If you look at their web sites you\'ll quickly discover that Symbol sells to an entirely different market than Socket and I suspect the Symbol cards are showing up as surplus on eBay.  I bought one of them a couple of weeks ago.  They are both Spectrum24 cards.

They all drain the battery, no way to generate RF without using power.  Most cards will cost more than $50 retail, but there are bargains on eBay.  Get the Symbol card if you can (watch the version) or an Ambicom WL1100-CF.

What about this?
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...1265&highlight=

and there was one other long post I made somewhere about getting the symbol card working.  It will work with the latest Sharp ROM, but there may be a configuration file or two missing that can be extracted from the Spectrum24 driver package.
