Questions from a new C860 owner
« on: February 26, 2004, 12:22:39 am »
Hi,

I just got my 860 and its awesome!  I still can\'t believe the size of it - pictures doesn\'t do it justice.

Anyway, I have a few questions/problems.  I\'ve searched the forums but didn\'t find exactly what I needed so here goes:

1) How do I setup to sync with win XP?  Do I connect my zaurus with the sync cable and wait until it asks for driver?  If so, do I choose the Network or Serial directory on the CD?  I tried both, and WinXP showed it as a connected device, but is it supposed to show up as a drive?  Am I supposed to install anything else from the CD (its all Japanese, so I don\'t have a clue)?

2) Assuming I can install the right driver from #1, I then installed intellisync from the 5500 update.  During installation, it installs USB drivers and I say proceed with installation even though they aren\'t win certified.  Once I do this, my 860 is no longer recognized (it doesn\'t show up in the Remove Hardware popup in the tray area).  Did I miss something?

3) I upgraded to the Cacko ROM and my Symbol Spectrum24 CF card no longer works.  It worked fine under the default Sharp ROM.  I saw the thread about a new kernel, but the link seemed to be down.  Is there an update to the Cacko ROM (I took it off the ZUG downloads) to fix this?  Does the tkcRom come with this fixed?

Thanks in advance.
-Gary

An update to #3 above.  I got javab0y\'s kernel off of the ZUG download page.  I combined his kernel with the updater.sh from the tkc ROM (so I can avoid the Invalid Model error) and reflashed my device.  However, it didn\'t have any effect.  Any other info would be helpful?

I\'m new to the 860 too about a month using it.  Unfortunately I can\'t find the FAQ that walked me through setting up the Z as a drive, but here is what I recall.   After you finish installing the device driver from the CD which it sounds like you did already.  Run the setup.exe on the CD to install the Japanese software.  The second item is the one that will install the software.  I believe it installs 3 programs  Intellisync, ZaurusShot, ZaurusDrive.   You\'ll have desktop icons for the software and icons in your systray once it installs.  They are in Japanese, but if you hold your mouse over the tips will show you the program name so you can run the one called zdrive.exe.  Now you can drag and drop files onto the Z, or work with files on your Z on your PC.  Since I can\'t sync with my calendar app on my PC, and since IntelliSync program is in Japanese I haven\'t messed with it.  But I read that you can install an English version of Intellisync for the older z\'s on the 860.   Just Remembered:  I believe you have to set the IP address on both the PC & the Z to get the zaurus drive to work.   Click on Zaurus Manager in the PC Systray   Set the connection to USB - TCPIP, hostname to zaurus, ip address to 192.168.129.201, on the Zaurus go to Settings-]Network and set the PC Link Hostname, USB IP and the Connection to the same values.   If this doesn\'t work post the problems, I may be able to dig up some memory cells to help out.  Hopefully I\'ll find the FAQ again and can post, cause it had some good stuff on it!   Good Luck!

P.S.  Once you have the IP address set up you can set up the Zaurus in My Network Places on your PC so you can access files from explorer and other windows programs.

Jean, thanks for the reply.  I finally(!) got stuff working this morning.  I don\'t know if I had to do the full install from the CD or just the USB drivers, but I did that and then uninstalled the zaurus manager stuff (including the zaurus drive) and reinstalled the IntelliSync 3.2E edition that comes with the 5600  (I noticed that this is just the english version, as denoted by the E, of the one from the C860 CD .  I originally tried the one for the 5500 (Intellisync 3.1) but that didn\'t work (and it isn\'t as full featured as 3.2 - missing the ability to sync notes).  It now syncs over the USB TCP/IP setting just fine - I might have messed up the pc-link on the Z since I needed to configure while I wasn\'t connected.  I was thinking of wiping all my PC changes and starting over in a more controlled manner to actually see what\'s necessary or not - but then again I don\'t want to screw with my settings now that it\'s working    Maybe I\'ll try on my work machine...

As for the symbol/socket card, I never got it to work so I bought the Ambicom one - works like a charm right out of the box.  So off to eBay I go with the Socket...

Actually I had another question regarding OZ and Cacko/tkc ROMs.  Will OZ run all the software that runs on the others?  If I reflash with OZ, what size partition should I use?  I am currently using the 25MB that the Cacko ROM needs.

I have both cards, the Socket and the Ambicom.  Both are great on power consumption.  However, the usable range on the Socket is at least three times that of the Ambicom in my own tests.  (walking around the neighborhood, basically)

I, too, am unable to use the Socket on my 860 since flashing a new kernel.  (and it won\'t work with kismet and such under the Sharp kernel)  Since, like you, I have both cards, I can just use the Ambi for now, but I really need to get it working with the Socket, and migrate the Ambi back to my 5600.

Personally, I\'d urge you to hold on to the Socket for a bit as I\'m sure we\'ll get them working, and I think it\'s a superior card in every way. (plus, it\'s smalller, less uncomfortable when thumb-typing)
