Quake On Cacko
« on: June 15, 2006, 09:47:11 pm »
Quake starts in a portrait mode.  When I went looking for solutions I couldn't find anything that worked.

I tried menu_video but it always segfaults quake.

pocket quake mentions "vid_mode 2" for 320x240 landscape right.. but vid_mode is not recognised.

I'm not sure where the configuration files are kept.  In fact, the file search feature does not find the word "quake" in any filename!

Has anyone played quake?  If so, how did you make it work?  =)

-------------

[edit] -- mysteriously, when exiting konsole the proper quake fired right up.  Wierd!

Now my concern is that the cursor keys seem to be backwards.  back for forward, left for right..  "invert mouse" does not solve this.

It's working great.  It's very fast.  The demos run very quickly, and playing around in single-player mode works well.

But it left my system in a very unhappy state (semi-portrait mode) when exiting.  Heh.

Strangely, asking to reboot and then saying no will correct it!  =)

But.. somehow quake keeps trying to start up.  I quit it, it restarts.. etc etc.. heh

I've got an SL-C1000.

Hmmm,

I tried to install it, using the offricial cacko feed. The engine and the icon installed well, but not the quake-demo ipk which contains the game data and is 8 MB large.

Could you provide me with all 3 working quake ipkgs? Just to get over this damn error?

Thanks in Advance for your help,

I used the official cacko feed just like yourself, and it worked for me.  So I couldn't provide something you don't already have.  =)  I don't remember there being three ipk files, only two though.. strange.

My issue now is that the controls are all backwards.  I've since moved on to experiment with other distributions so I can't play around with cacko/Quake right now.

I can help you with your control problem, if you dig out your old cacko quake packages. There can be 3:
1. quake engine
2. quake demo (data file)
3. quake icon

Or just the first two. However, the current quake demo ipk in the feed is broken.

If you have a backup of the 2 or 3 files of the CACKO fast version you installed, please mail it to axel.groll(at)gmail.com

You'll get the help I can provide the same day,

Thanx,

I received your Email. And I found out why I couldn't install the Quake-demo package. It depends on Quake-engine which was missing and in my previous attempts with the official feed didn't became installed in front of it.

So now I got it installed using the official feed. However, quake now seg-faults on me  Maybe someone has had the same prob?

OK,

now for your prob:

Quake keeps an  config.cfg file inside it's id1 directory. If you add or change the following lines, your controls should be reverse:

Code: [Select]
bind "DOWNARROW" "+forward"
bind "UPARROW" "+back"
bind "RIGHTARROW" "+moveleft"
bind "LEFTARROW" "+moveright"

If you have furter questions, please don't hesitate to post them

Let us help oneanother then.  I performed a complete cacko installation from scratch and reproduced the problem AND the solution.

http://jrandomhacker.info/Cacko/quake

I do not yet understand what is going on, only that I can semi-reliably force quake into landscape mode.

I believe this is the shortest way to launch quake in the appropriate way:

* run a console, and type "quake". Quake launches in its smaller portrait mode.
* exit quake using its menu
* I see the small quake icon in my taskbar, and I click it. My screen goes black. It shifts into portrait mode and quake starts in landscape mode.

--+

Your key corrections worked, although I did this:

/home/QtPalmtop/share/quake/id1/config.cfg
Code: [Select]
bind "UPARROW" "+forward"
bind "DOWNARROW" "+back"
bind "RIGHTARROW" "+left"
bind "LEFTARROW" "+right"

Hi,

I'm glad the key change worked for you. I have a second and third tip for you.

You can export values to influence libsdl's behavior. Just google for somethig as EXPORT SDL_VIDEO and 640. You should find a list of possible sdl variables.
Then simply set the needed sdl variables before you start Quake.

Third tip: Quake itself accepts several parameters: quake -fullscreen -width 640 -height 480
You get it.

Good luck. Seems I should install Cacko again. Are you using Light or standard?

I was using Cacko standard.  I'm currently re-trying pdaXrom, but I am having trouble installing it again  =(

doom, heretic and quake all seemed to work fine under Cacko.
