App Status?
« on: June 18, 2006, 08:30:00 pm »
i find that the bulk of my zaurus use overlaps weaknesses on different roms.  I use firefox, and really enjoy plugins (mplayer, flash, java) and use the z for av playback. (gpe pim seem more than adequate for my needs)
I noticed video playback on 2.6 kernels seems to have been something of an issue, and have only seen firefox plugin stuff in 2.4 based pdax (though keernel version shouldn't be an issue).  how are a/v, especially v playback and browser enhancements coming on gpe? (to be honest, i'm happy with 24 fps qvga on the tiny screen, though the possibility of vga is nifty)

I'm afraid audio/video and huge applications are somewhat a problem. All the greatness about having X on an embedded system can't cover up that we have a very limited set of resources available.

If you want more than just being able to start your-arbitrary-X-app-and-find-it-geeky-that-it-shows, then you need folks spending a lot of time optimizing that stuff. This is why the SharpROM (and its clones) are still #1 for these things.

I hope that once we have done the kernel 2.6 migration in OE we can finally start looking again to the demands of applications on embedded systems.
Cheers,
