p.s. the large images are 7 megapixel, the medium sized ones are about 0.5 megapixel, so be prepared for a slow download. uploading takes quite a while even over broadband!

OMG! disaster. Just when I thought things could only get better...

I managed to buy a half-broken 6000, which worked apart from the screen which had bust and leaked - backlight gone. However, you could see it was working, touchscreen OK, and via usb networking tell everything *seemed* fine. The case had cracks at corners, with little flat areas where it bounced as it hit the ground falling from on top of someone's roof (apparently there was a choice between falling off or dropping the Z). I didn't find out what the guy was doing on his roof with his Z!

My theory was that I could thus build one good Z out of the two broken ones. Very carefully took both apart, swapping the motherboards, took an extra pic of the new motherboard as it was slightly different.

Reassembled the good one, and it's dead. Dead as dead can be. Won't power up, unresponsive to holding power, pressing reset, usual things. Naturally, the doubly-bust Z with broken SDRAM and bust screen is also dead.

I'm now pretty depressed. I can only wonder if there's something I managed to disturb. There are microswitches onboard to detect the battery compartment locks, but these seem OK. The backup-battery switch is ON.

Can anyone suggested ANYTHING? I checked the keyboard, and the two LCD connectors, and they seem fine.

maybe put the partly broken one back together to see if you missed something?

Sorry to hear about your tosa.
Please re-check the lcd connector and the battery switches.

BTW. How did you get the half broken tosa? I'am interessed in such a device to do some measurement in order to optimize the 2.6 kernel.

I put a "wanted, part-broken 6000" in this forum's for-sale/wanted area, and someone responded... some time later after discussing price, delivery and waiting for customs, it arrived.. after testing it for a week or so, I did the transplant.

I took a few photos of the high-flying Z and submitted them to Akihabara's "Crash Baby" section, and they published in the last day or so:

I partially took the all-good one apart again, and this time bent the LCD cable very carefully and made sure it was very deep into the socket before pushing down on the clamp. I also checked both batteries with a meter and found that one was totally dead. Using the good battery, and waggling the battery locks a few times, I got it to boot up! It gave me a warning about the backup battery being low but still seemed to work ok. Even so, when I shut it down to check screws all snug, it wouldn't boot at first.

So, an unlucky combination of poor LCD connector insertion, bad battery and perhaps poor backup battery. But at least I'm back in business.

For my next tricks: trying out Dirk's 2.6 kernel release, and then resuming tryign to get tomtom to run on it.

Congratulations on your sucessful repair! Did the 2 batteries simply need recharging to have a 100% repair?

ooops, I just discovered this hanging reply.

seems that one battery is very poorly and doesn't hold charge very well at all, the other one is OK.

I think the LCD connector must still be wonky as the backlight went out and refused to come back on again. I am not 100% sure that the replacement motherboard is perfect, but then, it worked pretty well before I rebuilt them and reflashed to GPE and now to Opie on OZ3.5.4.1beta kernel 2.6. hmmm. meanwhile for work I have a shiny new Sony Vaio TX2 which is keeping me happy!
