5600 Processor - How do I tell if I have a PX250 or PX255?
« on: February 26, 2004, 09:47:58 pm »
Is there a command I can enter in the console or an app that will tell me which processor I have in my recently purchased 5600.  I have heard that some 5600s have the 255.

Also, the front of the box mentions which processor it contains.  Whether this guarantees anything, I don\'t know.  Mine, from Amazon this week, is a bona-fide 250.  I did the whole kernel thing to enable the buggy cache or whatever.  Did not notice much improvement, but I don\'t notice a lot of stuff.

Thanks for the excellent info. I have the PX250 but it seems to run the older ARM apps just fine.  Methinks more RAM would be nice, but Ive been paranoid to use a swap file too much due to wearing out the CF cards.  Nonetheless I am hooked on the Zaurus as it is really a true mini computer rather than an organizer.

I got mine from Amazon as well, and the box says it\'s a 255.  Unfortunately, the serial number on the box didn\'t match the serial number of the Zaurus, so you obviously can\'t trust the packaging...  I contacted Sharp and can you believe they can\'t look up my serial number to tell me which processor I have?!!  Jeeze!

Sharp must still be making them with a 250 processor. I got mine and the main board failed on it after <1hr. It went back to sharp and they replaced the main board and it came back with a 250 processor. I would have figured that when they discovered the problem with the 250\'s they would have switched to the 255 and all new ones after some point come with a 255 but the fact that the new main board that they installed at the service center was a 250 tells you something.

I feel as though I got lucky, and perhaps you might too.

I ordered an SL-5600 from Amazon at $289.88, fully expecting to receive one with a PXA250. I have received it and the box indicates \"PXA255 Processor Version\", the serial number on the box matches the serial number on the SL-5600, and /proc/cpuinfo confirms the presence of a PXA255 in the device.

So, if you are willing to settle for the PXA250, you just might get lucky and get a PXA255 for a reduced price.

Enjoy OTR!
