Z Style Software On An Oqo

Hi All

I was thinking, there are some cheap OQOs popping up on ebay all of a sudden. A lot of comments about OQOs are that XP runs way too sluggishly on the hardware.

The hardware in the OQO far outpowers the hardware in the Z.

Anyone know if there's a lightweight linux, Z alike, pda style OS distro that's being developed for the OQO.

I would imagine something like OZ would run phenominally fast on an OQO.

damnsmalllinux? - runs from a 50MB business-card CDROM.

mostly these days it's not linux itself but the heavyweight desktop and browser that kills performance on slower machines... e.g. firefox expects to find lots of memory for caching bitmaps for each tab/window. DSL is pretty fast as it doesn't use KDE or Gnome, runs OK on my old K6/3 laptop with 128MB memory!

you could also quite happily build qtopia for x86 and use that as the desktop environment - would run pretty well in that amount of memory... but of course you'd have to build everything from scratch.

I run DSL on my OQO. pdaXrom wouldn't boot, so the kernel needs fixing. Sashz said he would fix it, but never got to it...

What about powersaving/suspend/instant-on type features?
All the good things one likes on the Z. :-)

Am resisting the urge, am really trying to use my Z more. I don't need anything more than a decent word processor/spreadsheet in a pocketable format. However an OQO, with faster than a Z like performance, the ability to run full scale software (quickly gets on out Openoffice soapbox), with the Z's

I quite like the Sony PCG-U1 & U3 as being ultraportable with hires screen - smaller than the picture book, and they're relatively affordable these days... not as well connected as the flybook but a damn site cheaper.

At the moment I really like my OQO because it keeps my hands warm in this cold weather while I am surfing the net  not sure what to do when summer comes though...

Erm, you live in australia, it doesn't get *that* cold there even in winter!

You could buy a USB power face fan when the summer comes and attach it to the case ;-)

Actually, though, I've been deployed to places that at night when it got down to 80F, I was shivering.  So I see where you're comeing from, but it still sounds funny.

I know what cold is  I used to live in northern germany for many many years and we had snow up to my doorsteps which was on a small terrace  so in comparison to that, australia is quite warm even in winter

btw, OQO is now selling their units as UMPCs. At least their marketing newsletter calls them that now. on a related note, the OQO is featured for 3 seconds in Mission Impossible 3  so I guess windows is till the choice for the impossible instead of linux
