Rtl8150 Based Usb Ethernet Adapter Problems
« on: July 08, 2006, 01:00:15 pm »
Hello all,

please forgive me for this newbie question - and please point me in the right direction...

So: I have used cacko rom successfully with my rtl8150 based USB ethernet plug.

I have just installed OZ/Opie 3.5.4.1  ( it looks great !) and wanted to use my ethernet adapter to connect to my network.

I went to the network control panel and tried usb0, eth1, eth0 etc. -> all resulted in "Starting interface failed".

If I do "modprobe rtl8150" I get: "Fatal: module rtl8150 not found"

I have tried the ideas from here: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=20361 - but no luck

Two more data points:
- I see no light on the ethernet adapter
- I want to connect to a linksys router so that I can go to the internet with the Zaurus. On cacko this was automatic, plug and play.

What do I do to connect with my USB Ethernet adapter? ( the hardware - cable + ethernet adapter probably work, since they worked under cacko...)

Thanks for any advice!

Anything I could try? Has anyone succeeded using a USB Ethernet adapter?

How?

I really would like to use OZ - but without Internet access it is not too much fun...

Any advice / idea would be truly welcome!

Thank you Meanie! Could you please tell me where I can find the rtl8150.ko  module? And also: where (which folder etc.) would I need to copy it on my Zaurus?

Thanks again...

'ipkg search rtl8150' should tell you that 'kernel-module-rtl8150-2.6' is the one you want.

('ipkg install kernel-module-rtl8150-2.6' installs and activates it in case you're wondering, the package manager should also work)

Thank you Koen your help.

I typed "ipkg search rtl8150" in the console: nothing happens: I just get the prompt back.

If I do "'ipkg install kernel-module-rtl8150-2.6" I get: Cannot find package...

Could you please tell me where I can find it? (Since I have no network access from my Z I will have to use my Windows PC to download ...)

Thank you!

Ah, right, no network. In that case let's do it the quick and dirty way:

1) download [a href=\"http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.4.1/images/spitz/misc/modules-2.6.16-spitz.tgz]http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.op....6.16-spitz.tgz[/url]
2) extract it from /
3) do a 'depmod -a' as root.
4) reboot just in case

that should give you all the modules you need.

Koen: I really appreciate your help.

I have done all you suggest: and yes, in fact I have now an "rtl8150.ko" module in /lib/modules/2.6.16/kernel/drivers/usb/net.

I try to connect now to the network ( via Settings / Network ). I still get: "Starting interface failed"

Any more ideas?

Thank you again!

could you look the the out put of 'logread', 'dmesg' and 'ifconfig -a' for some clues why it fails?
My pegasus based linksys adapter worked instantly using a powered hub and a ratoc usb cf card, but I didn't use the gui to configure it.

if you have dhcp in your network you could just do 'udhcpc -i eth0' and see if you get a lease.

Koen and all: it works!!!

Thank you!!!

I just assumed, that the network applet has to work in order for the network to work...

I was wrong. Something is off with the network applet - but the Web browser works, after doing 'udhcpc -i eth0' . Also: if I use the network applet, it breaks the connection, and I have to do 'udhcpc -i eth0'  again to get it back...

An interesting detail: with Cacko I did not have to use a powered hub for my USB Ethernet adapter - with OZ I have to... Why? ( This is a minor detail, as I do not mind using a powered hub - still, its interesting)

Time to download some new packages...

The usb controller can only deliver 150mA and the 2.6 driverr refuses to powerup cards that say they require more, the 2.4 kernels weren't that strict. The problem is that some usb devices say "I want 200mA" but only require 100mA. I suspect your rtl8150 adapter is one of those devices.
