5600 low on memory
« on: February 29, 2004, 10:06:20 am »
i\'ve got a 5600 for 1.5 weeks now. i\'m using the standard pre-emptive kernel with no pxa workaround.
i also bought the tkcplayer for mp3s (the built in one sucks big time).
sometimes when i have tkcplayer, calender, and todolist running, i get an out of memory box which asks me which appliction to close!!.

i\'m trying to remove some servers running on my Z which i won\'t be using. Example, in top i see qtsamba taking around 8 MBs with 4MB resident when my Z is docked. since syncing with linux doesn\'t work on newer sharp roms, this samba server is useless, how can i keep it shutdown when i dock my Z ?

in fact i tried killing it, but it keeps respawning!!.

thx.
Fadi.

One of the first things I do after I flash a ROM is to turn off Fast Start, to do this hold the stylus to the icon when the dialog box comes up uncheck the fast start, this will free up a ton of memoery space.

already done that on the todolist a couple of days ago, now no program has fast start. after i did that i haven\'t had this low on memory popup.

but for example now my Z undocked has 4775kb mem free 11MB cached!!. as soon as i dock it, my free memory drops to 700kb!! probably due to samba starting.

i don\'t know where all this memory is going.

thx.
Fadi.

How about creating swap space? It may be a little bit slow but you can get
enough memory.

IME, tkcPlayer has some major memory leaks, so even turning all Fast Load apps off may not help. I have reported this in theKompany\'s Mantis system, but bugs do not seem to be a priority. The memory values in apps like top are misleading anyway as it included shared memory and such and cache can be freed up at any time for apps that need more memory.

Also the samba server isn\'t used for syncing, it\'s only for file transfer, which works fine under Linux.

oh, so tkcplayer has a memory leak!!, i was suspecting that. cause everytime i got this error tkcplayer was running!!. sometimes if it\'s running for a long time, and then close it, it can\'t start and stuff untill i reboot.

well i guess a reboot per few days is tolerable.

thx.

I\'ve never had the case where I cannot restart it straight away. I simply get low memory warnings when it changes to the next song and if I ignore this for long enough Qtopia decides to kill tkcPlayer off and cleans everything up.
