C1000 Infos For Newbie
« on: August 05, 2006, 09:17:58 pm »
Hi, first of all thanks to everyown that with his work permits this forum to grow up and give many info about that wonderful pda that zaurus IS.

I'm interested to buy a zaurus, and according to the new models I was interested about sl-c3200.
But broswing in internet I've noticed that at the moment of writing NO auxiliary ROMS ( Cacko, pdaxrom and openzaurus ) are ready for a stable OS onto this model. The c1000 instead is recognized and fully supported by all the ROMS above.
So I tought to buy a c1000 that in difference from c3200 has not a drive inside.

The question is :
In a c1000, harddriveless, the OS will be in the ROM.But the size of the ROM is enough to support OS AND all other programs i will install after the OS?
To be quickly: i wish to know if with a cf OR sd card i'll able to install software into those cards. And to know where normally , without CF or SD the OS will put during the installation of the new OS.

Thanks a lot.

Yes you can install applications to cf or sd... aslong as it is formated to a linux fs... ext2,ext3, etc... because links will be set the same way they are on the flash space...

Now, is it enough room to install OS and all other programs.. YES!... these apps are small as is... and if they can be stripped anymore... they have been... I mean.. you can't install every package from the feed to the flash space... I would tell you how much space is left over after a pdaXrom install but it has been so long...

If I'm understanding this correct... all roms are installed in the flash space.. except OpenBSD (work with c3000,c3100,c3200), Pocketworkstation (Don't worry about that for now)

Thanks to everyone replyed to me.
I know linux because of my job, I'm an asterisk admin , and I 've used Slack, Gentoo , Debian and so on.
I 've also a Libretto 100ct with Slack on board.
I've ask these infos beacuse I've not many experience abaout Zaurus, and I've never ahd anyone of this wonderful product.I also must buy an unit directly from japan so for these reasons I'm very cautious before the purchase.

TO InSearchOf :

So In a C1000 the rom is 128 MB, you tell me the OS goes in ROM and the other packages I can put in a CF.

TO scheck.r :

I've read not all the ROMS are stable for the 3200 here :

[a href=\"http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/44]http://www.pdaxrom.org/node/44[/url]
http://www.pdaxrom.org/docs/installation/quickguide

http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/cacko-faq.html

http://wiki.openzaurus.org/Spitz/Install <<<---- here the writer says a normal thing, I know, but he says it only for the installation of the 3100 and 3200 and not for the 3000 or 1000 for example : This document was written with the best intentions, however, if there is an error in the document that damages your hardware or data, the responsibility is yours. We will not be held liable. You do this at your own risk.
I've also read in all the forum that many people ask for a stable alterative ROM for the 3200, how can is possible it if , like you said, 3200 have stable alternative roms?
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=19501

Can you help me and my doubts?
Is not a method to install the alternative OS into hd and to do a dual boot?

Many thanks to everyone.

The OS and included applications are installed to the flashrom space. All additional apps can be installed to other media. There is no "to my knowledge" a prebuilt (pdaXrom) rom containing just the OS. But you can feel free to build one using pdaXrom-builder :-)

Good luck on your purchase and the same on your rom choice.

PS. Yes you could install lets say, pdaxrom rom, uninstall certain apps, and reinstall them to a cf or sd. Dont see the sence in it... but you could do it :-)

I didn't want to mean stable, but just available, sorry. I can't help you on the stability status of the 3200 since I have a 1000. Even for the 1000, there isn't any "stable" alternative OS, may be Cacko is the most stable for what I have heard. However all ROM are "quite" stable.

As for memory, I have OS and apps on 128Mb internal flash. I have still 34Mb left out of 128Mb with apps like :abiword(witth all plugins), gnumeric, firefox, gaim, links, sylpheed, xchat, dillo, wellenreiter, xmms, mplayer, gqview, imposter, xournal, xpaint, mtpaint, freenoteQT, rox-filer, archive, gnuplot, mrxvt, leafpad, notecase,Tuxcards, opie-reader,xpad, xpdf, dlume, comic book reader, ...
Contrary to a desktop, most apps are stripped down and have no docs
