Hey guys,

I just wanted to apologize for the influx of spam lately.  The whole admin and mod team have been doing a great job of responding to the reports, so keep them coming in.

I'd like to, at some point, implement a captcha system for creating accounts.  That should help in greatly reducing the number of fake accounts registered which in turn will reduce the spam.  Unfortunately, most of the admin team including myself have been busy with our personal lives.

We still have that account at ibiblio.  I still plan on moving us there at some point.  Things are ready to be migrated.  Just be patient with us and eventually we'll get there

Enjoy the forums,

Roy

I reported a spam message yesterday, and within a matter of minutes it was deleted.

The spamming has become worse in the past few days.
Now the spammers are uploading their porn pictures directly into their posts.
I think OESF should go back to the old way of admin validation.
Of course I realize it takes personell to oversee validation, but who wants to open up a post and see that kind of stuff (especially the ladies).

Just my 2 cents

The WiiLi boards have an interesting way to take the teeth out of spam: New users cannot post links (or images) if they have been on the forums for less than 7 days and have 10 posts or less. It should be easy to tell a spambot in 10 posts, and you have 7 days before they can post links, even if they cram out 10 posts quickly.

It won't end the testing type spam(to see if they can post with their bot to your forum, i.e. 'newgirl'), but without links and images, the follow up is not so bad.

It does cause some problems with new users (having to PM links or breaking up urls), but the trade-offs should be worth it.

I have changed it so that an admin will have to validate all new users until I get the forum software upgraded.  Hopefully the newer version will help combat the spam.

The upgrade will happen within the next couple days and will require some downtime.
