I use Cacko Lite 1.23
I'm still a Linux newbie, and Cacko seems to be the "just works" distro besides Sharprom.
Be aware that the "Lite" version is missing some important modules, and you'll need to research Cacko full and lite to find out which modules are missing in lite.

I use Cacko lite at the moment. I used the Cxx0 tkcROM from theprototype.org for ages, because it was more stable and polished than Cacko at the time. Cacko seems to have caught up though. (The tkcROM is still available from the download area, but the application feed that went with it seems to have vanished when theprototype.org went offline.)

I've looked at OZ/Opie 3.5.4.1 as well, but I hit too many usability snags early on, so I abandoned it. I may look at it again in another version or two. I like the fast kernel and the possibility of using big SD cards.

pdaXrom here, for a week now, but I think I'll stay with it.
Used Cacko before, but I like pdaXrom more.
It is faster, easier to maintain, less (negative) surprises, much more software available for it (although not compiled yet, so you should know how to compile software).

Downside:
Not entirely optimized for PDA usage (e.g. font sizes, window sizes window handling etc is not as easy as with QTopia).
It behaves much more like a normal Linux PC than QTopia does.

For me, pdaXrom turned out to be much more stable and sturdy than Cacko. Much more works "out of the box", less tweaking needed for my extended needs for functionality.

However, I can kind of agree that for basic needs Cacko / Sharp may be the ROm of choice because "it just works" as someone said.
Yes, if just works, but only if you don' need more than it provides.
pdaXQTrom is a very nice approach, but for serious work I find it too slow. Too much of a compromise.

pdaXrom also just works, and for me it works much better. But I'm looking for a "mini laptop" rather than a "PDA". That's where pdaXrom is great.

Which "usability snags" are you thinking of in particular?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hi,

Getting a bit off-topic, now, but never mind. As I remember, they included:

(1) No volume control for audio playback

(2) No taskbar applet to eject SD cards

(3) Bluetooth setup via GUI didn't work - interface was confusing, and changes didn't 'take', i.e. when I went back into it, settings hadn't been saved. I had to edit the files directly in the end. (Is this one of the things that is better in Opie 1.2.2?)

(4) Couldn't figure out how to size some apps (e.g. xmms) correctly for the C760 screen (I might have persisted and found a way with this one if it hadn't been for the other stuff).

(5) I also was put off by the lack of a clear statement about the SharpROM binary compatability issue. OZ's FAQ contradicts itself over this. Opie's web site too, although in a more subtle way. I had to wade through a lot of old posts on the forums that are no longer correct or relevant before I reached some understanding of the issue.

(6) At an application level, I often view large numbers of pictures from a digicam card. IMHO tkcGallery is still better than any of the other applications that I have tried (e.g. faster at displaying pictures and thumbnails, not forced to display filenames in thumbnail view), and so I am reluctant to drop it.

Issues (1) and (2) have already been discussed on the forums, and the developers are aware of them AFAIK. Issue (3) might be sorted in the latest version of Opie. My plan was to try again when Opie 1.2.2 makes it into OZ, give it a more thorough road-test and then give some feedback (although I did put a note about the OZ FAQ contradition on the discussion of that topic at [a href=\"http://wiki.openzaurus.org/Talk:FAQ]http://wiki.openzaurus.org/Talk:FAQ[/url] ). Since the subject came up now though....

Regards,
P.

I use OPIE 1.2.1 at the present time. I have tried Sharp ROM (very briefly), Cacko/Crow, tkc ROM 2.0a, Sharp ROM 2.1.2, Cacko hybrid and anything else that supposedly works with the Collie. Sharp 3.1.3 kinda worked, but I was concerned about the amount of the OS that was in flash and RAM and the upward mobility of the distro. The best functioning distribution has been OZ with OPIE. GPE felt good, but lacked functionality I need as a professional. OPIE is sufficiently fast, can be installed on the the SD card and has potential longevity. The potential for using the Collie with Linux 2.6 kernel is really exciting considering the features it has.

I've been on Sharp for ages, but it gave me one suicide too many from the crud package management system. So, I've moved to OZ/GPE. Without Prism3 Drivers I'm now kinda stuck, and my biggest problems are that sound doesn't seem to work on mine (I can't even FIND Alsamixer!) there is no Taskbar Media handler (So I have to eject SD and CF from terminal) and finally and majorly that I can't get any software on it.

Why the hell am I moving to an OS that's alot more hassle for (for me) a limited gain? Begins with an S. Qtopia, has a 4 digit passcode which isn't even technically a logout. Just block the screen and keyboard till you input the right set of numbers. Opie isn't a BIG improvement, by any means.

GPE however, has a full passwordbased multi-user login screen. I can even put my picture on it. X will also (hopefully) allow me to play VNC on the desktop apps on my University terminal (Aeryn-Sun: Sun Ultra 1 150/64mb running openBSD 3.9), my personal internal network terminal (Shodan: P4 1.9, Slack 10.2), my phone (HTC Universal, Unnamed, and currently undelivered. . . I'm waiting!) and my TabletPC (On the condition that I win the lottery by the time I get to Uni)

Voted pdaxrom as it seems best bet for me! Loving it all so far

- can't seem to edit the poll to change it, think it needs a mod, but I think we all know what it means..
