E17 Installation
« on: November 07, 2006, 06:50:06 pm »
Hello everybody !

I have installed E17 on my Ubuntu desktop edgy and i want to do the same on my C1000.

First
I have done some search on the forum. There is some post about E17 but i don't know if it is up to date.

So i think pdaxrom would be the best choici to install E17. But which version ? rc12 ? 1.1.0r121 ?

Second
i have found this website for the package of e17 :
http://gefechtsdienst.de/uman/Zaurus_C-860/index.html
and this
http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/daal/

so where can i found more up to date package without rcompiling ?

thank you in advance !!

Dinorex, which rom do you advise me to use with E17 ?

actually i try pdaxrom 1.1.0r121 but i have few difficulties to run enlightenment ...
the .xinitrc script is quite buggy because of some binary or script missing ...

i think the .xinitrc was made for an old release of pdaxrom !
or pehaps i have forget to install something ... i have install nothing except enlightenment on my pdaxrom !

thank you in advance !!

I suggest to use beta3 (most stable release for C1000) and the packages were probably compiled for rc12 or beta1 - if something doesn't work, try installing "libiconv" from the beta1 feed.
r121 is a testing release.

OpenZaurus has up to date enlightenment packages as well, and with OZ they are part of the main distribution, not some random repo on the net that might or might not work.

So i perfrom a ipkg install e-wm without errors !

Now what can i do to launch E17?

Do you have any advice ?
Is there somebody who use openzaurus and use E17 ??

just one note:-

so far i am using pdaxrom 1.1.0beta4 (tasting with her excellent suspend / resume function), and corrected with its keymap and /or [Fn] key functionality...
(since i don't think the matchbox / fbpanel bugs inside the beta 4 / r121 is adhered inside other windows manager...   )
then i installed the daal packages and it seems working quite well - EXCEPT the followings: -

1. cannot switch themes (don't ask me why since i also tried the ethemes as well, of coz in vain...)
2. cannot switch other backgrounds (ditto, i also use the enlightenment GUI packages and also in vain), BUT you can make use of the command line option provided in the tutorial chapters.... therefore i made some default background .sh to make it easier to change...
3. contrast / brightness / zoom in / out is not functional now
4. no start menu hotkey
5. x fonts readability problem (but rxvt / aterm is excellent) <--- this part, i admit, is the buggiest part as it is dealing with the xinit integrity since it also appears when i install fluxbox as well....
6. aterm 'transparency' is not adaptable to the 'background'

out of these stuffs, you can swiftly using it although the swap demand is still larger than the other windows manager....

perhaps we can install the e17 package from openzaurus on the pdaxrom distro ?!

so is there package for pdaxrom up to date ?

i just want to test e17 on my z wherever the distro !
If it is pdaxrom or openzaurus, it's the same for me !

i know it's testing experience. I think an environment like E17 is the must for the pda under Linux.

Actually i have installed openzaurus, e17 package from feed.
When i log in, i have e17 instead of gpe !
Is there a way to return to gpe and switch easily between like gdm for example !?

thank you in advance !

you can taste from my crawling reply that i am now busy with many other things as well... therefore, i have no time to help on that exploration...

please kindly seek it from yourself as i have just made it set-and-go (up to tuned beta 4 + E17 daal packages) at this moment.

after my utmost settlement, i may return to Z exploration so that further info can be provided.

sorry for keeping you frustrated since I am really occupied at this stage...

It's nothing ! you already help me in my quest !!! lol
But the more i try and the more i think e17 is a dream for zaurus ..

- e17 is still in build so we can't expect a really stable wm
- i see some speed problem (often the menu are slow, ...)
- the more i try, the more i think this wm is not able to be used on a pda (setup too complex, ...)

but i will try again and again !!

The main problem I saw with it was that the installed size is huge. My c750 could only take a pared down version. With that said, it did look very pretty.

Yeah, I should probably rebuild it and use altboot to run it off my CF/SD card rather than my limited internal flash.
