Wellenreiter on C860
« on: March 05, 2004, 09:29:13 am »
I installed Kismet on my C860 running the stock Dynamism ROM and it works great.  I then installed the libpcap, libopie1, libopie2, and wellenreiter using the versions on Proto\'s site which are supposed to work with the Qtopia based ROMs.  These packages all installed just fine.  I can start up wellenreiter as root from the terminal and the program opens up fine.  When I try to start the sniffer it tells me that my card isn\'t properly configured.  I tired all the combinations of drivers and options in the configure setup screen, but I still get that error message.  I read somewhere that you need to enable wireless suppoort in the kernel.  Can wellenreiter be made to work with the Sharp/Dynamism ROM on the C860?  Thanks for any help.

Yes it can, but you need a kernel with wireless extentions and monitor mode enabled. There are several in the download section of ZUG. I too use the version that proto has on his feed and it works with both tKc & cacko Qt ROMs. The latest version of cacko\'s Qt ROM has a kernel with wireless extensions & monitoring mode enabled (plus lots of other improvements as well) you may want to think about using it. You\'ll find it at http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/cacko/qt/05-MAR-2004/

I took Jerrybme\'s advise and installed the new Cacko 1.20 Qtopia based ROM (3-5-04).  The ROM is fantastic, but I still can\'t get Wellenreiter to work.  Kismet and other wireless apps work fine.  I installed all the drivers mentioned in the first post in this thread.  Anyone know how to make Wellentreiter work with this configuration?  I have been using a SanDisk wireless card which works fine for everything else.  Thanks.

Ive been trying as well on the latest CackoQT ROM.

Ive edited the /opt/QtPalmtop/qpe.sh. file to allow wellenreiter to run as root.

I get the device not properly configured error.  Also, there is no interface (eth0, etc) to bring up.  If i install the host app drivers i can then pick eth0 and start scanning.  The card never actaully turns on and no networks are fount.  Im only sittting couple feet away from my WAP.

A couple other oddities....as soon as i install host app drivers my dlink card is now recognized as Zcomax Xl-325H 200mW.  Also, when configuring the card in wellenrieter, if you use the first interface with host app it just exits.  If you re-enter wellenreiter and reconfigure, the interface is incremented by one.  eth0 is now eth1.  I currenlty can choose from eth2 or eth3.

I then decide to put in my wcf12 card.  realizing I just reflashed, I know I need to go into /etc/pcmcia/wlan-ng.conf and edit the manfid line to get my card to work.......unfortunatly I cant seem to find that file anymore!  VI just opens a new file

time to reflash.  Anyone got any ideas what Im doing wrong.

I wish I could help you jrsjkd, but my experience is pretty consistent with yours.  jerrybme said it shoud work and, judging from his other posts, I think he knows what he is talking about.  I can\'t find the problem, but my wireless does work fine with Kismet and other apps.  You might check out www.irongeek.com , but most of his work seems to be with OZ ROMs.

I got the WCF12 working on a 860 with the latest CackoQT ROM (1.20):

1) /etc/mcmcia/wlan-ng.cong is hidden (.wlan-ng.cong)
2) # ls -a /etc/mcmcia/|more to (the file should be near the top of the list)
2) # vi /etc/mcmcia/.wlan-ng.cong - to comment out the manfid)
3) save the file without the . (/etc/mcmcia/wlan-ng.cong)
4) reboot you machine

Hope it helps,
Colin

So is Guest saying that editing that file allowed him to get Wellenreiter working, or did it just allow him to use his CF wireless card to connect to a network in the regular manner?

Not exactly.  Thats the fix for gettting a linksys wcf12 card working.  I was already aware of that, thnx anyway

The problem is that after installing the host ap drivers, I went to edit that file and it no longer existed   VI would just open a new file.

I hate to use Kismet after try out Wellenreiter.  At this point though I think ill muddle with Kismet and see if I can get it working.

I can\'t remember where I got the Kismet packages.  I tried a bunch of them too before finding one that works.  Private Message me using the service on this board (at top of page), give me your email address and I\'ll send them to you.  They worked for me!

I have a few questions about Kismet. I have installed Cacko\'s latest rom and the kismet-qt package but I always get the error connecting to server message.  Do I have to install the host-ap drivers for this to work?
Or does the roms\' built-in monitoring mode alleviate the need for kismet?

I did not need to install the host-ap drivers.  All I had to install to get Kismet working was:

kismet_zaurus_2[1].8.1_arm.ipk
kismet-qt_2.0.0_arm.ipk

Good luck.  If you need the packages PM me and I\'ll send them to you.

Thanks for the info toadatrix.  I found the 2.8.1.ipk on the web even though it shows up in the ipk installer as 2.6.  Also, one of my problems was that I wasn\'t running the kismet-qt app as root.  I installed a 3.0.1 version of kismet and that seems to work. but the 3.1.0 and Feb0401 versions of kismet do not work (at least through kismet-qt).  Is there an updated qt application for these?

I am only aware of the 2.8.1 version of Kismet working with the new Cacko ROM.  If you have a later version that works could you please point me to where you found it or email it to me (PM me and I\'ll send you my email address).  Many thanks.
