[c1000] Root Partition On Sd
« on: December 06, 2006, 08:20:39 am »
Hi to all!

I'm new to this forum, and sorry for my English because I'm from Italy.

I'm wondering about buy a Zaurus C1000 but i don't know if is it possible to install the operating system over a SD card.

When it come with Sharp Rom the OS isn't on the SD, isn't ?

and when it come with Cacko in English?

The SD card is only needed if I want install OZ or pdaXrom?

the OS is run from internal flash memory, and you can install a new OS by booting off an SD or CF memory card using a special diagnostics menu.

as long as the memory card is big enough (need 256MB card, FAT16 formatted), you're ready to go. these cards are pretty cheap nowadays, most people buy large cards. Note that a 1GB sd card is the largest supported in this diagnostics mode as far as I know.

once you've got the new OS on, you should be able to use up to 4GB sd cards, if you install the new kernel module from the C3200 which supports them.

You only really need 64MB. That's what I used for quite a while...until I decided that I wanted to be able to have something other than the ROM install files on it. If you want to try out different ROMs and you have an extra >=64MB card laying around, you can use it to flash them.

Not a good idea... Z takes a un-intended crap... and you can't get it to boot...

Remember NANDs are 130+mb's

I'd say at the least 256mb's :-)

Ok, if I have understand the C1000 come with Sharp or Cacko rom inside (depends by the dealer) and if I want pdaXrom or OZ I don't have to clean the original rom but only install it on a SD card ?

No, you'll only ever get the Sharp rom from the dealer, and it may or may not have the english patch applied.

Cacko is based on the Sharp rom but has many more improvements than just the english patch - you would need to install this manually if you wanted it.

Ok, so you suggest to leave the Sharp rom inside (in English) and use pdaXrom or OZ or Cacko from a SD card?

Which one of these you suggest to use ? by the signature seems everybody uses pdaXrom...

Not exactly.
You cannot leave the Sharp ROM inside and "boot" another one from card.
You'll have to use the card to install another ROM in internal flash and thus replace the original ROM.

There are approaches for dual-booting, I think it works with OZ, but AFAIK it doesn't work with Sharp / Cacko / pdaXrom.

provided you follow the instructions, loading a different OS is pretty trivial

however, start with an empty flash card and do a flash backup first, then copy off the image file from the SD/CF card to your PC, in case you ever need to restore.

then install Cacko or OZ or pdaXrom etc.

That was when I only had a C750, so the "backup" I knew how to do (the one from Sharp/Cacko) fit on the card.

As for the damage part, there is no way that I know of that you can damage your Z by flashing, even uBoot. You may have to use the Fn+D+M menu and do a NAND restore, but that's about it.

maybe damage is not the right word to use, but inoperable would be a more fitting description. your Z won't be broken, but you won't be able to use it until you "fix" it, ie manage to restore a working NAND.
