Mplayer/kino2 Freezes Playing Longish Files
« on: December 28, 2006, 12:57:23 pm »
So, the movie playing capabilities of my c1000 were pretty much perfect I thought, but lately I have had problems playing largish .avi and .DivX files. The smallest one I have noticed it having problems with seems to be about 650mb in size, and what happens is:
they start playing perfectly, then after about 45 minutes the sound continues playing fine, but the video seems to slow to a crawl, then plays merely occasional frames. Then, about 5 to 10 mins after slowing, it totally freezes both audio and video, giving a black screen, with a couple of buttons on the bottom of the screen...usually the Kino2 "Play" and "Fast Forward" buttons.
The only way I have found out of this frozen state is to reboot by removing the battery briefly(as the machine is so frozen there isn't even the ability to access the "Start" menu. If I then play the same file, first fast forwarding to the part where it started misbehaving, then it'll play the rest of the movie perfectly!!
I doubt this has anything to do with it, but I am playing full-screen, at 624 mhz, with cache set to 1024. I have tried cache set to zero, and 512 also, to no effect.
Any insights/cures anyone?
Thanks.

overclocking at 624 over an extended period might cause the Z to freeze, ie if it gets overheated.

Thanks for the tip. I boosted the cpu speed to 624 though, as I was getting somewhat  jerky video with slower speeds...........the playback is from a Seagate 8gb CF microdrive, by the way.
I have noticed the bottom of the device getting warmer at 624, but never thought it too hot. I will try backing the speed down a bit, maybe it'll play better now...it was several months ago that I upped the speed.

Tried a few different speed settings last night. Finally found that 520 mhz (with the faster bus speed chosen) works well from the microdrive. At that speed there is still some choppiness from files on the 150x SD card though (from the SD bus speed I guess??) , but I'll live with that. At 520 the Z runs a lot cooler than at 624 !! Haven't tried it out for an hour plus yet, but I will report back if that's still an issue.
