Remote Sl-5600, Aka Poodle Control?
« on: January 10, 2007, 02:02:13 am »
One of the promises of my SL-5600 Poodle that I have never fulfilled is full remote control.  I am ready to tackle the issue.  Here is what I want to end up able to do:

1. Connect the Zaurus USB cradle to my notebook computer.
2. Place the Zaurus in the cradle.
3. With a few clicks and/or commands from the prompt, connect to the Zaurus.
4. Display the Zaurus desktop on my notebook screen and control it with the notebook mouse and keyboard.

In other words I want the Zaurus to have either an X server or a VNC server through the USB to my notebook.

This means I can keep all my PIM information in the Zaurus all the time without worrying about synchronization or copying data back and forth.  And, when I am running my notebook, I can use it's better input devices on the Zaurus.

I have always been using Opie from the Hentges ROM.  However, I want to use the ROM and configuration that will best (most easily and/or most reliably) accomplish the above dream.

Any suggestions on where to start?

Download and install FB VNC Server on Zaurus.

Download and install RealVNC Server on Windows or Linux machine.  You need to use VNC client function to connect to FB VNC Server on Zaurus.

For Mac OS X, you may want to use Chicken of the VNC as your VNC client.

I hope the above will help.

Thanks for the response.

I have tried to install FB VNC Server on Hentges/Opie and Hentges/GPE in the past without success.  And both times I was using a wireless networking card to connect between the computer and the Zaurus.  Up till now, I have never successfully networked the Zaurus to the computer via USB.

So, while your answer is probably the best final step target. perhaps my question was not clear enough.  Let me ask it another way: On what Zaurus ROM is easiest/most reliable for setting up networking via USB and then installing a remote control technology like FB VNC?

Searching here in the forums I have noted that setting up these two things are problematic for many.  I want to understand what base install has been found to be the best place from which to start to get these features running.

I am using SL-5600 with the original Sharp ROM.

I have been using the above-mentioned steps to connect the Zaurus via  USB cradle with my Mac Mini.

At times, I make use of retractable USB cableretractable USB cable.

From what I am reading, VNC operation with the original ROM seems the easiest.

When I first got the SL-5600 I tried to use the original software and found it lacking in some areas.  Back then I did not have a laptop computer and demanded more from the Zaurus than just PIM functions.  Now I use it almost exclusively for PIM.

I may have to try the original ROM again if I want solid VNC server operation.

I am finally on the stock Sharp ROM.  I downloaded the above mentioned FB VNC Server.  I cannot see a way to install it.

I put it on a CF card and copied it to the internal flash "Install_files" directory.  The "Add/Remove Software" tool does not see it.

I don't see access to a command line anywhere.

How does one install a .ipk file on a Sharp ROM?

Oops! It takes you nearly six months to switch.

Well, try using the ipkg-new here.
