Sd Limit

I'd never thought about this with the 6k.  Is there a 1gb limit in addressing SD cards?  I've tried both of my 2gb cards and it won't mount either of them - at least not with the default settings in fstab anyway (haven't really dug in to the issue yet).  

Before I bang that flat spot on my forehead - is there a 1gb limit?  If not I'll go about figuring out why these cards won't mount.

I have heard (on these forums) that if you format the SD card with the command:
mke2fs -T news /dev/mmcda1

This will make a file system with 4k blocks per inode (and this is supposed to work). I don't have an SD card larger than 1G, so I haven't had a chance to try it. Let us know!

I have heard (on these forums) that if you format the SD card with the command:
mke2fs -T news /dev/mmcda1

So I have had a chance to try this, and it doesn't work  Seems to be a driver thing (read: a closed source driver). I did pick up a SD to CF adaptor

Using this, I can mount a 2GB SD card (in the CF slot).

It goes without saying that the PNY SD 2Gb card I got today didn't work... Has anyone seen or better yet tried this:

I do not know enough of the SD standard or about how the Z handles the SD slot to say if it is real or not.

Opinion/experience anyone?

If you are using 2.4 kernel (e.g. Sharp ROM, pdaXrom 1.1.0 beta1 and etc), you will hit the 1G limit because of the SD driver. If you are using 2.6 kernel (recent OZ> 3.5.4.1 or Angstrom), so far 4G (non-SDHC) works fine here.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I'm using a "stock" SL-6000, with the Sharp ROM version 1.12 and Kernel version 2.4.18. I rather not flash the Z with another ROM. I like the stability of the Sharp ROM and for what I do with my SL-6000 I'm not sure switching to a different ROM is worth the hassle, as minor as that might be.

So, if I stick to the stock ROM , is there any way around the 1GB limit:

- Availability of a new open source driver that works with the 2.4.18 kernel?
- Kernel update + maybe a new driver?
- Would a particular type of 2Gb SD work with the stock ROM and kernel? That's what the vendor at the link I posted previously seems to imply.

I have researched all the posting and information I could find on the internet, but I have not been able to draw a final conclusion. A lot of the suggested "remedies" I found are for the clamshell Zs, the SL-Cxxx series, and I do not know enough about the differences with the SL-6000 to be able to say if any is applicable in my case.

I have been using Linux on my desktop and notebook PC for over two years now, so I'm not afraid of Command Line based updates, hacks and manual editing of config files. I just need some guidance on the specifics for the SL-6000. It is the best pocket computer I have ever owned and I do not want to brick it (although it might be a good excuse to get one of those SL-C1000 that can be found for less than $400.... )

I think if you want to stay with stock or other 2.4 kernel bases ROM, you probably have to live with the 1GB limit. >1GB limit in 2.4 kernel is something theoretically possible, but nobody having the skill (not me) is interested in backporting. The driver for clam-shell Cxxx first came out from a company named C-guy. Obviously they hired somebody to do the hard work in backporting in order to support their SD products. I wish Tosa was more popular in Japan. But the reality is nobody except only the community is backing Tosa.

One thing I can never understand is: if you can live with Sharp stock ROM, why can't you live with 1G SD limit. When I was on stock ROM, 1G SD is more than enough. You can always use huge XXGB CF for storage. And unlike other Z, we don't have to swap CF for wifi card.

One good reason for > 1GB SD on Tosa is having a CF GPS card and wifi running to use many large maps on SD card with qpegps or kismet.

Few reasons:
- I'd rather keep the storage on SD and leave the CF for other stuff, i.e. Bluetooth
- Once the SL-6000 goes to Zaurus heaven I'm going to get a clamshell, probably a C1000 (not a fan of HDD storage). In that case I'll definitely need the CF for at least Wi-Fi, so I rather not spend money now on >1Gb CF memory I can't use in the future.
- My wife has a digital camera using SD. Every time I have upgraded the SD for the Z, she got my old card and she gave hers to our daughter MP3 player or camera. It may sound silly given the price of memory these days, but try to buy new SD for everyone in the family evey six months.....
- And finally, if the 1Gb barrier can be broken with the stock ROM, why not??!!  

I play all the time with Linux distributions on my notebook, I wish I had the same confidence in doing so on the Z. You never know, I may decide to try an alternate ROM. I can always go back to stock after all.

Sorry to take so long to reply to this thread. I just decided to go ahead an order the card, and if it didn't work on the Zaurus, I'd use it elsewhere (like my camera).

The sad news is that it _DOES NOT_ work in the SL-6000 as advertised. Dmesgs reports many block errors, and even as VFAT (which is the default format of the card) it doesn't mount.

Sadly, it looks like through the SD slot, 1GB is the limit with the stock Sharp ROM. I do have a SD to CF adaptor and that accepts SD cards bigger than 1GB, but then that kind of defeats what a lot of us wanted which was stationary storage (a card that would stay with the unit).

On a vastly different note, I have also just bought a Nokia N800 ,which supports 8GB in the SD slot (and it does work). I have been looking for a linux-based replacement for my trusty Z. And although the Nokia takes some getting used to (it isn't QT based, and the binaries such as tcpdump) don't work on the N800. It has quite a few nice features. I'll write a review/info/comparison later.

No I haven't. But then as I mentioned earlier, I am enjoying my new little box (the Nokia N800). It isn't perfect, but they are doing something right with the battery. Mine has been connected to my WLAN for 36 hours straight on battery. Can't do that on the Z.

Now if I could just get those really useful Qt apps I have gotten used to over the years (like Zplayer, and Zeditor) to run on the N800.
