Zaurus Out Of Production?
« Reply #60 on: January 14, 2007, 05:42:12 pm »
I don't understand what all this fuss is about. The Zaurus is just another very nice device but with any device, there will be a time it will become obsolete and replaced with better technology. However, this has not come yet. Sharp just announced that they will stop producing them which is not very surprising since the Zaurus is just a very powerful multimedia  dictionary on their prodcuct line. The Z is very well build and will last me a few more years before it will be shelved and replaced with something better that hopefully will be available a few years down the track. As for software, well, just use pdaXrom and compile your own. Shapr/Cacko has been there for years without significant changes in software and you can always continue to use those. The only problem I can see is for those stuck with using OZ...
Back to using Windows for me

Bah. A low blow from down under. (pun intended) I agree with Meanie. Unless you somehow derive your self-worth from the toys you carry, drive it until the wheels fall off. I carried my HP 200LX for a long time and could probably still make do with it. If there is a market, there will be another. I was thinking of starting a post in the OT section entitled:

Portable Belgian Waffle Maker spells doom for the Z

That is about the level of silliness we have reached. The thing with all-in-one devices is that they tend to do a lot of things, few to none of them well. If you don't believe that, tell me how you like using your blackberry as a cell phone. I don't. Groups like this and smart folks like Meanie and others keep these devices alive long past their EOL and have the side benefit of helping to keep the resale price up well beyond the viability of the product. And with that, let me say - Bears Win, Bears Win, Bears Win!

I agree, but why does it have to be a "Belgian Waffle Maker" ?

i think that people are just lookning to jump ship and ale wieghing thier options

perhaps if this went from a zaurus fourm to a "linux portables" fourm it would be more acurate as it seems some of the questions this board has been getting are more and mare diverse

the one thing i dont like about the handheld mailing list was that it was a mailing list, for this type of discussion a fourm feels alot more natural. perhaps we should start a new sister site dedicaed to portables with a linux slant. we could pick up most of the 1 question guys out of the handhelds fourm then and perhaps get them more involved with the community

even though my Z is dead i dont mind doing what amounts to tech support for the people on this fourm at all.

Maybe people are looking to jump ship.  I dunno, though most of us enjoyed looking at the new Z's as they came out..and buying a new one occasionally.  I think I might be typical in saying I'm hanging on to my Z--but I'm also looking for the next thing, just like I would have been had there been a zaurus 4000 coming out, just as I had been when I had a 5600...then a 6000.  My z's have years of use ahed- but that doesn't preclude an interest in better linux handhelds

Bel-gium?

Some would have you believe that the Bel in Belgium stems from the ancient Bel or Ba'al

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baal

As for the Z, I think there's plenty of life in it yet. We're still looking forward to full hardware support (SRAM for one) in the 2.6 kernel, improvements in pdaXrom and OZ, Angstrom, zodttd's full speed Neo-Geo/Capcom arcade emulator, a new GPE, QT4, maybe a full-speed playstation emulator and who knows maybe someone will even one day successfully hack a 2700G AND 128MB RAM onto their cxxxx?!?

2007 could actually be a great year for Z OS's and software IMO!

We do use a belgian waffle maker every now and again ...

Maybe Belgium refers to Bel or Ba'al ....

But the Zaurus will be out of production, that seems to be a fact.
I'll still be using mine for a few years I guess. I ain't seen nothing else I like that much, yet...

Having fun,
Chero.

in the gallic wars Caesar makes reference to a group the Belgae living in that region.  The only way bel would be ann issue in what was then celtic gaul would have been through the phoenecian traders of effect of the punic wars--begium might be a bit out of the way for that (though migration might help accout for it)imho.

ok, now it seems I must go hunt down this Belgium waffle and try it out!  ... I like waffles and if a Belgium is that good, I would love to try it out! So any recommendations?

Oh and come to think of it, SHARP isn't exactly well known for maintaining product lines. With its pull out of earlier pda products in US and other countries, I'm not surprised.

Anyhow, I think our Zs are still going to be one heck of a pda many years to come ... as long as they don't break. I mean, which pda can claim to be a mini convertible tabletpc running linux? 8)
