Is C1000 Or 3200 Best As Last Chance
« on: January 12, 2007, 10:20:53 am »
I have been happily using a 750 for about 3 years but the battery is dying so I am thinking of getting a new model. As Sharp will not be producing any more of these great devices, should I go for a C1000 or a 3200? I have a lot of CF and SD cards so am not sure the benefit of a 3200. I will run either cacko or pdaxrom so is there a benefit to the internal drive?

Thanks. I better be quick before they all go :-(

Mark.

I would go for the C3200, since it's got more upgrade ability.
You can replace the microdrive with an 8GB flash, or when good sources for 16GB cards come out, you can stick one of those in it.
The C1000 has no internal CF slot and is also missing some electronics that support the internal CF slot.

I ditto Jon J.  I have a C1000 which I love, but if I bought another I'd get a C3200.  There are times I want to leave my wifi card in for extended periods of time which means I have to leave out my 4gb microdrive.  I know I can buy a large capacity SD card, but I already own the CF microdrive.

Other than a price difference, I see the only reason to get a C1000, is the extra space inside the casing, where someone with enough skills could solder in a wifi and/or bluetooth module. But someone with those skills and intentions wouldn't be asking the above question in the first place.

Jon,

YOu are right, I'm not likely to do that! I'll check the best prices to decide and then order shortly (conics seems best overall deals though the C1000 has increased by $50 in the past week) and as UK exchange rate is good I will look at any extras too.

Thanks for your advice.

I own both machines.  They are both great but, if I had to choose only one it would be the 3200.

Why?  Well, pdaxii13 (bug fixed pdaxrom beta 3) was designed for MicroDrive use especially the full version ones.

On my 3200 the SD slot is mainly used for removable storage and the CF slot is almost entirely devoted to networking.  The 1000 has me constantly flipping between CF memory and networking.  The SD slot is contantly occupied with one particular card and it is a major inconvienence to swap it out with another card so, I don't do that very often.

Have fun with your new Z no matter what model you choose.

I haven't heard, but wish someone would too. I'm not so concerned about BT, but internal WiFi would sure be useful. I'm too shakey to solder, otherwise I might try.

I would go for the 3200...you can always open it up and replace udrive with CF, or IF (and it's a BIG IF) someone started a service to implant wifi and bluetooth, you could simply not fit the microdrive or put in a CF card with the cladding removed in order to make room.

the 3200 has the most flexibility.

Same here.  Internal WiFi in a 1000 would be totally sweet!
