As I said, it plain doesn't work but if anyone wants to try fixing the font error then you could try messing with

/usr/share/Mowitz/fonts.txt

Thanks for compiling it anyway kkazakov13- I've got the distinct feeling I'll have another app you may want to test your compilation skills out on very shortly, if you're interested of course..

Well, I tried that, and after over an hour trying different combinations of libraries, installing extra font packages and older versions of siag, and editing that file, I resigned myself to it not working.

It looks like (at least on Beta3) it will not even get as far as you managed to  I get the error too:
Code: [Select]
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct
Panic: can't load any fonts!
And yet I have the same (and more) packages as danboid.

Oh well - it was worth a try. Thank you kkazakov13 for spending your time compiling this

The difference being that I'd compiled siags dependencies with

./configure --prefix=/usr

and left them on whilst installing kk's packages too so maybe that made a difference?

There are a few other options left yet. For lightweight word procs we can try Ted

http://www.nllgg.nl/Ted/

and maybe flwriter

http://www.whoow.org/people/Jean-Marc.Lienher/xd640.html

but I've given up trying to compile FLTK apps under pdaX so maybe somebody else can try that one? The problem with both of those os neither load .doc files but Ted deals with RTF which is well supported by most WPs.

For light weight spreadsheets we can try ABS

http://www.filewatcher.com/m/abs-0.8.tgz.18.0.0.html

(The ABS homepage seems to have disappeared y'see) and Abacus

http://tahoe.inesc.pt/~aml/abacus/abacus.html

Anybody got any more suggestions or recommendations for either type of app?

Now he tells me this  Quite possibly it made a difference

I have a few suggestions (just for wp since I don't currently use spreadsheets).

Beaver - small and lightweight editor, just been revived, not sure if it can handle .doc though:

http://www.nongnu.org/beaver/

LyX - depends on LaTeX, so a little heavy but does handle .doc:

http://www.lyx.org/

and just to throw in my tuppence worth; I've used Ted before, I can't really say it struck me as any more useful than Leafpad/Nedit...

Ted is a great little app IMO- I've tried it under ubuntu and its just what I was looking for. I would say its a bit unfair to compare it to Leafpad or Nedit, Windoze Wordpad would be a better comparison.

I got it to compile under pdaXii13 and to my delight it loads in a couple of seconds (unlike Abiword and pw etc.), which is exactly what I wanted. Its just a shame that it failed to open a new editor window or open an existing text file

I've attached Teds stderr output from when I ran it and tried opening a text file with it just in case it makes sense to anyone here. I've sent this same file to the author of Ted to see if he has any suggestions. When I compiled it I simply did a

make
make install

and by default I think it compiled a static binary. Maybe it just needs some different configure options?

Well, tbh I was comparing it in terms of what it/they can't do - read .doc formats properly. As an editor it's great  (Though I took the bloated 'Gedit' route in Debian   )

As for your problem, I'm just grasping at straws, but have you invoked Ted as per instructed on the website?

Quote
To start it just invoke Ted & or /usr/local/bin/Ted &. To start Ted with a certain file invoke Ted something.rtf &.
Other than that, I'm completely in the dark.

I tried adding a & to the end of the Ted command but it didn't fix anything unfortunately.

I'll let you all know if the developer tells me how to fix it as I think Ted would make a fantastic addition to pdaXrom. OZ and Angstrom. Most of my .doc files don't have graphics or elaborate formatting so I can quite easily convert all that to .rtf as I much prefer Teds loading speed to that of Abiword- 2s vs 20!

I got a reply from the author of Ted, 'e sed:

"This is definitely a font error. Ted thinks that it can open
the font mentioned in the error log. But then.. opening the
font fails.

I can you try what xfontsel says about this font, and/or
whether xlsfonts lists the corresponding scalable font.
(size 0)"

So I checked the output of xlsfonts under pdaXii13 and it does list the exact font that Ted is requesting but then I noticed that running xfontsel produces exactly the same errors that we've been experiencing with siag i.e

Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset

I seem to have all the pdaX font packages installed- any ideas?

Actually if you try to run most built-in X apps (xcalc, xclipboard, etc) you'll see it's the same, with differing fonts being specified as missing - it's as if this implementation of X can't find the font paths - even though they're specified correctly and issuing (just to make certain):

Code: [Select]
xset +fp /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc
xset fp rehash

Makes no difference. I also honestly doubt it could be solved by installing any more font packages.

(This is all from my limited knowledge of the workings of X ^__^;; )

I noticed that this question has also been asked before on this forum, and never satisfactorily answered. It seems like the 'Missing charsets in String to FontSet' problem is here for a while to come yet

Of course, anyone with more knowledge on this, please feel free to come along and correct me/help out

I've just tried and failed to get SIAG office compiled under pdaXii13. I've been searching OESF and the net and although I've read posts about people running siag under pdaX I can't seem to find any packages anywhere- pdaXrom.org is down AGAIN which hasn't helped!  Anybody know where I can get siag packages that will work under pdaXii13?

gnumeric and abiword run great on modern PCs but their 1min+ loading times on the Z aren't much fun. Are there any other decent, LIGHTWEIGHT (i.e not GTK2 or QT/KDE based) speadsheet or wp progs I should consider? They must be able to open xls/doc or use a format that I can easily convert my xls/doc files into. Pathetic writer supposedly opens doc files and I've found an app that can convert xls into .wk1 (Lotus-123 files as used by siag) so I should be OK there.

Thanks!
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

siag was running on a very old version of pdaX, packages are still [a href=\"http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/cacko/pdaXrom/18-FEB-2004/feed/]over here[/url], but I bet they won't be ok for the newer versions.

I have to say I don't quite understand what you are looking for :
- gnumeric loads in 16secs on my Z
- I just opened the last opened document (through document history) in 4secs. This is a 65K .xls document.

Are you running swap ? It could speed up gnumeric's loading and opening docs.

With the help of Ted's author I managed to get it working under pdaXii13 and I've uploaded it to the new packages thread!

Chero:

I'm sorry, I'm just obsessed with load times. Why settle for 16s if we can have 4? I realise that gnumeric is the only 'serious' choice of ss for Z users but not everybody needs all the functions and compatibility with Excel so I just want something simpler that loads faster.
