Fs - 2 Sl-5500s (1 Is Black ) And Maybe An Sl-6000
« on: January 27, 2007, 12:52:44 am »
Hi Folks,

As you can see from lack of recent posts, I really haven't been doing much with the
Zaurus these days.  I have a completely working SL-5500 which is black from removing
the silver paint on the front to look really cool and unique.  I did this before I got an SL-6000.
The other SL-5500 is missing one sound channel, maybe just the jack, maybe not.  It
also as a small and barely noticeable wear spot on the screen I think due to the previous
owner's repeated clicking of the opera icon on the stock ROM.

Anyway, it would nice to be able to keep one of the power supplies as a spare for my
SL-6000, so I'm willing to entertain offers for various combinations of things, as I have
2 cradles, 2 power supplies, 2 flip covers, 1 standard leather case, and 1 aftermarket case.
I suppose I could throw in a 64MB CF if I had to, but would rather not.

Oh yeh, a note on the black one.  The flip cover will not attach as tight as it use to, since
in process of removing a slight layer of the paint, that funny shaped indentation for the
flip cover became a little shallower mostly on one side.

Anyway, reply, or PM, and I will try to answer questions, and may post pics soon if there
is any interest.  I am in the USA and prefer paypal.

lets have a look at some pics of the black one, out of curiosity if possible. I was thinking of spraying mine.

Here are a couple pics.  I forgot that it was very tough to remove all the paint in the
area that frames the screen.  I spent about 10 minutes on the spot near the bottom
and would have had to spend about 2 hours to do it all around that frame, since there
is a little ledge, and it was very tedious.  Anyway,  I was satisfied at the time with
the results I achieved.

EDIT: I have no idea of the age of either of the 5500 units.  I bought them off ebay about
2 years ago in used condition.  It seems the rules require posting the age or a reason why
it can't be stated, so I am just trying to comply.

did you buy that black 5500 off ebay, painted black?  If so it may have been mine!  I sold it probably about a year or so ago.  If this is the case, the unit is about 4 years old.

edit:  It's sad how I get so excited over potentially seeing it again...  I hope I like my kids as much as my zaurii

Nope, it was silver when I bought it.  I took the front of the case off
and used 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper, and a slow stream of water from
a sink.  There is a thread, something like "powdercoated zaurus" here
somewhere.  Someone had suggested powdercoating, and someone else
posted pics of one (like mine) that was blackened by just removing the
silver paint off the front.  I took my time, and made sure I preserved the
original contours.  I think mine came out a little better, but again I did
not pursue removing all that silver paint in the "display frame" ledges.

Do you still have any of this for sale?
I am looking for a parts unit.
I need a digitizer mainly.
If so what price are you looking for?
If I could just buy the black one that would be best.

Thanks
Jon

Gee, if you want a parts unit only for the digitizer, why
sacrifice the perfect black one?  I could quote you a very low
price on just the silver unit and flip cover.  That would allow
me to keep a battery/charger/cradle/ as a spare to use with
the black one.  I'm thinking around $35 or so for the silver
one off the top of my head.  It's tough to let the black one
go super-cheap though.

I understand. You mentioned a scuffed or sdratched portion of the screen on the silver unit.  Can you give me any more detail on this?  I know getting pictures of this kind of thing can be difficult but if you could that would be great.

Hi,

There is a very small dot which is tough to notice, and it usually
takes me a few seconds to even find it.  It can best be described
as a very slightly cloudy dot.  It is not like a scratch, and you can
see right through it, but it is list a tiny bit cloudy.  I think I tried to
get it in some pics that are posted in another thread, perhaps in the
5500 forum.  I will try to find it, since I spent a lot of time trying to
get it to show in a picture.  It was part of a discussion where someone
else had that issue, and I cam to the conclusion that it was from repeated
clicking on the "opera" icon in the Sharp ROM by the previous owner.

I will try to find that thread now...

EDIT:  I found it.  The pics are attached to post #6 in this thread
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=21440

Again, it is barely visible, but if you look near the O in opera, there
is an ever so slight "shadow" in between the O and the icon itself.
It is in the bottom picture.

That does not look too bad.  Will you take $30 plus shipping?
Would PayPal work for payment?

Do you still have the black one buy any chance? If so, how much are you looking to get for it?

Hi,

Yes, I still have the black 5500.  I have just started a project (in JAVA) that I hope I
can get to run on the 5500 when I am done.  For now, I want to keep the 5500.  If I
find that the project is too much for the 5500 to handle I will update this post.  Since
it is the only 5500 I now have, it would be best for me to sell all the 5500 accessories
with it.  That would be 2 cradles, 2 batteries, 1 original box, 1 original case, and
1 power supply.  Also, I have been watching ebay a little, and they are not fetching enough
at the moment in my opinion, to make me feel good about parting with it.

Oh yeh, I have one of the older socket low-power WIFI cards, that I have never been
able to get to work with a WEP access point, so I'd be including that in the bundle.
