Text Editor That Opens Hidden Files [solved]
« on: January 31, 2007, 02:47:43 pm »
EDIT:
I finally found the trick to opening .hidden files in leafpad.
This only works in ver 0.8.9 It has a different File>Open dialog than 0.7.9
Fn + click with stylus opens a box that says "Open location" and "Show hidden files"

Sorry to post requesting an app that everyone here already probably knows about, but my search for a text editor for pdaxrom has been futile.

I need something that works like ZEditor in Cacko.
Not a console based editor, I want a GUI editor.
It also needs to be able to browse .hidden files and .hidden dirs
So far, I tried Leafpad, textedit, scite, nedit, gpe-edit
Leafpad won't allow access to hidden files/dirs
textedit won't allow access to hidden files/dirs
scite has a setting to allow access to hidden files/dirs in it's configuration file, but that didn't work.
nedit only launches from the console with many errors.
gpe-edit I cannot seem to find all it's dependencies. Where do I find GTK+ ?
I have GTK and GTK2

My current method of editing .hidden files is to copy them to my hdd, edit them there, then copy them back. doing it this way is very cumbersome.

Thank you,
Jon

there is no filename field.
I tried clicking the filesystem area (left pane) and typing a period.
I tried clicking in the right pane and typing a period.

here's a screenshot, where is the filename field?

I finally found the trick to opening .hidden files in leafpad.
Fn + click with stylus opens a box that says "Open location" and "Show hidden files"
This is NOT in any documentation!!
This only works in ver 0.8.9 0.8.9 has a different File>Open dialog than 0.7.9 does.

I downloaded the source and scoured the entire website.

NEITHER of these methods works for me.  I am using Leafpad 0.7.9.  Is there a newer version?
I need to be able to edit hidden files.

« Reply #4 on: February 08, 2007, 12:04:09 pm »
Leafpad 0.8.9 has this feature of right clicking.
0.7.9 does not.
Before installing Leafpad 0.8.9 on pdaxii13-akita, I had to uninstall 0.7.9 first.
look at the bottom of this thread.
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=23178

BTW, I edited the above post to specify that 0.8.9 has the right click option to view hidden files.

I tried the period thing in 0.7.9
It didn't do anything but add a period to the directory description.
0.8.9 is much easier to use.

Thank you for the explanation.
When first reading this post, I tried period, then hit enter.
I didn't want to try to find another solution, and found 0.8.9 in the "New Packages" thread.

I tried the 0.8.9 version and still could not get the right click method to work...it pops up with a different menu than you stated,  but entering a period in the typing space and holding the tab key worked.

Hey, glad you added the part about the "tab" key, insearchof.     Makes a world of difference.

It must act differently in pdaxii13-akita.
I'll post a screenshot as soon as I get a working screen capture program installed.

Jon_J,  I tried to take a screenshot,  but it's in some weird form of screenshot.xmd which I can't open in any graphics program...even the one on pdaxrom itself!

But my right-click options are completely different...select all,  input methods, and insert Unicode Control Character, along with grayed out Cut, Copy, Paste and Delete.
Also, I just have a small box in the middle of the screen for the open dialog and it won't expand.

Are you sure you have 0.8.9 version that was posted in the New Packages Announcements pinned thread?
for screenshots try:
gsnapshot 1.0 alpha2 (i didn't have to install any depends for this) you may need GTK2

Description
gsnapshot is a GTK2 application. It provides for capturing a screen snapshot of the entire screen, a window or a region, with a simple user interface.

* Screen capture can be saved to a file as PNG, JPEG or BMP format.
* Screen capture can be printed to a PostScript file or piped to /usr/bin/lp.

oh, by the way. check your Leafpad version in help about.
If pdaxrom beta3 comes with Leafpad 0.7.9 already installed, you'll have to uninstall it first, or 0.8.9 will not install correctly.
I had that problem in pdaxii13. I installed 0.8.9 when 0.7.9 was already installed and the package manager said I had 0.8.9 installed, and there were 2 different places on the desktop that had the leafpad icon, but both of them were 0.7.9
The very first thing I do when I've been re-flashing pdaxii13, (after adjusting light & power) is uninstall Leafpad. Otherwise I would forget to uninstall it later, then install 0.8.9 on it and have the mess I mentioned above.

Why not try this?  To edit hidden files, I just use symlinks to them...

ln -s .yourfilename yourfilename

At least on my sl5500 (Sharp ROM), it works great to make hidden files and directories visible and easy to access.  I use this often.  When you edit yourfilename, .yourfilename should get edited.
