Pdaxii13 5.3 Wishlist
« on: February 10, 2007, 12:18:40 pm »
OK!

Here it is!

A short wishlist from me to Menaie which will pretty much complete, nay perfect what he has released in pdaXii13 5.3b

1 - Include the UK USB keyboard map!

2 - Include libXau to fix xmms prob

3 - Associate .flv and .FLV (Flash Video ala YouTube videos) with mplayer under rox

4 - Include Ted and make it the default app for opening .rtf and .txt files under rox. Ted offers most of the functionality of Abiword whilst loading faster than leafpad, scite or textedit  and it loads MUCH faster than abiword even when scim is uninstalled!

5 - Add streamtuner please! Honestly, one of THE most impressive things my Z does is streaming web radio stations- who wouldn't want to do that? vlc can do this but the sound is choppy under vlc and under streamtuner the sound is smooth even when you underclock to 208Mhz!!!

Just do those 5 things Meanie and I'll send you the biggest donation I can afford just as soon as I get myself a steady job and have crawled out of debt and I'll also wear a

"Who's Mr. Menaie?"

T-shirt with lots of dragons n' stuff on it too, sometimes!

EDIT

As with all my posts, I make several edits after the initial posting so always try to re-read 10m later- thanks!

I personally always end up changing the default image viewer under pdaXii13/rox to feh coz it opens much faster- speeds the key for me!

5.3 is working sweet!!!!   I guess my wish is more towards the feed admin.  I noticed that kdepimpi 2.2.7 is compiled for pdaXrom but only in the pdaxrom community feed under RC11.  Can we put that in the Tyrannozaurus feed? I could only find it in one place and I'm starting to question the integrity of the pdaXrom site.  I would put up a link to the .IPK but I cant open the community section of www.pdaXrom.org
C1000 w/...  Cacko Lite (When I use the Z alot for business)... pdaXrom (when I see something cool and want to try it.  Best way for me to learn shell commands)

May I suggest a few more minor tweaks to improve the default state of some popular apps for 5.3 PE? These kind of additions would be the icing on the cake to an already outstanding little OS!

xmms currently starts with both RANDOM and REPEAT selected- turn both these off please

gnumeric defaults to having all 3 toolbars enabled and I'm sure 99% of people who use gnumeric on the Z turn these off before they do anything with it as they hog too much screen space at 640x480

dillo's default font size is too small for most people- a default font factor of 1.5 to 2.0 would be better

Adding /dev/ttyUSB0 as the default device and ATZ as the default init string for the modem settings tab under pppconfig

Can anyone else smell PDA OS perfection?

I second the motion for a working out of the box Dreamtuner or Shoutcast...I find myself listening to more internet radio talk shows to get the REAL news.  Even listen to Alex Jones who is a hoot but is sometimes spot on on SOME issues.

Also, I am addicted to listening to podcasts downloaded using Corsair on my Cacko Zaurus.  Podcasts are BIG and getter bigger as far as what is offered out there. Love listening to TWIT while I do my daily walk here in the mountains of NC.  Hey, even John Edwards (US presidential candidate) and Elizabeth Edwards have a podcast and the BBC podcasts are great...all of this is FREE.  You download them and then listen to them later with your Z in your pocket and earbuds.

Could you please have the hotlinks in Sylpheed open in dillo.  Dillo is really very very good as a web browser but there is no option in the Sylpheed preferences to open the links in Dillo.  A string doing so can be added but I don't know enough code to know what it is.

Fonts need to be increased in size all over the place.  I really don't like to have to wear my glasses to use my little computer/pda.

Please somebody make a KA/PI which WORKS in pdaxrom and will import either the old .xml from Sharp addressbook book or import from a KA/PI file. I tried just placing my KA/PI file from my Cacko Z into every blasted directory associated with the pim that I could find but nothing worked. It apparently has to go through some "import" process and the import process seems to be broken.  TKCaddressbook just created a separate ipk which successfully imported those files...maybe someone could do that which may be a simpler way of doing it.

Also, can someone port Zsafe to pdaxrom?  I need a place for my logins and passwords.  I'm open to a substitute if files can somehow be exported from Zsafe and imported into the new app.

As they say,  thanks for listening.

I don't know if pdaxrom beta3 has all this, but here I go anyway.
pdaxrom has several places where fonts need to be changed to increase readability.

1. Use the Look & Feel app in system tools. go to Icon & Text tab.
Change Icon font to 14pt arial bold
Change Menu font to 14pt arial bold
Change Title font to 14pt arial bold
uncheck "outline fonts"
Change font color to black (RGB - 0, 0 ,0)
Once you make all these changes, 'X' will restart, and your background will turn to RED
After 'X' has restarted, go back to look & feel and re-select your wallpaper, and let it restart X again.

2. goto meanie's feed: [a href=\"http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/beta3/feed/]http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/beta3/feed/[/url] and download these:
gtk-theme-switch_2.0.0rc2_armv5tel.ipk
obconf_1.6_armv5tel.ipk

3. gtk-theme-switch doesn't place an icon on the desktop. You can launch it in a console, or create a desktop file and icon for it to launch it from an icon.
You will probably only need to use gtk-theme-switch a couple times. To launch from a console, issue this command: "switch2"
When it opens, click the small cross "+" on the right. This will expand the dialog.
Place a checkmark in "use font" and click "Browse"
You can select fonts in here. As above, I selected:
Arial pt14 bold
Click apply or preview, then apply, then close this dialog.

4. To increase the thickness of the titlebars in all windows, use the following tool.
ObConf (it will be in system tools, once installed).
In ObConf, I selected "Artwiz" theme, as this gives me the thickest titlebar.
Changes are shown immediately.

5. One more thing I do is open Leafpad and increase it's fonts. Again, I used arial 14pt bold.

6. In dillo, under View>Options go to the font tab, Look at "Font factor" and increase it to 1.2 or higher. You'll need to click save, then quit, then close dillo and re-open it to see changes.

(In screenshot, top is GTK-theme-switch, and bottom is Leafpad)
(Another screenie of the launch menu in 14pt arial bold)

Yes,  I've done most of that and the fonts are much improved...I was just suggesting the fonts should be "kicked up a notch" in the original installation.  I'm basically lazy,  you see.

But Jon_J already is using pdaXii13.

Meanie,  you have pretty much persuaded me.  I WILL try pdaXii13.

Three questions:
1. I chose the option to use 121 MB when flashing beta3 although it looked like I only had about 78 internal when I started beta3.  Do I have to do any repartitioning of the internal in my C1000 to flash to pdaXii13 or just flash right over what I have?
2.  Do I use the same flash instructions at Quick Install Guide or are there some different procedures?
3.  How do you suggest I format my 4 GB sd card to use it to install software AND to be read by Windows XP?  I'm confused by the ext2 and ext3 options for formating.

Just point me to a page if this has all been answered before.

Thanks.
(This is pertaining to installation on my C1000 which currently has pdaXrom beta3 installed.)

I do find this very annoying.  I didn't see any options for the toolbars, however.  Is there a way to set a preference for the toolbars, short of recompiling the app?

Drake01:

There is no re-compiling necessary. Under gnumeric you will see a toolbars option under the View menu. Under there you can turn on and off the 3 toolbars by unticking each one and gnumeric remembers your settings when you quit but I was just asking meanie to have them this way as the norm as it makes the most sense when almost half the height of the display is occupied already by the window decorations, matchbox panel, gnumerics sheet tabs and the top and bottom gnumeric status bars.

Maybe I was using a different version of gnumeric, but it did not remember settings for me.  I believe it would remember the settings of a previously saved data file if I specified the data file on the command line when opening gnumeric, but if I just opened the app by itself, it would always default to displaying all toolbars.

I couldn't find a command line argument to hide the toolbars, and there didn't seem to be a preference that worked.  However, I don't remember exactly which version I was using.  I just flashed PdaXii13, and I'll see how things work when I re-install gnumeric.

Thanks.

I was just presuming you were running a recent build of pdaXii13, sorry. The first couple of pdaXii13 builds had an older version of gnumeric which did have this problem but the repositories will have the newer, 1.1.0b3 build which does save preferences.

Banana Pi running ALARM on a WD Scorpio SATA II HD
System76 Gazelle Pro i7 laptop w/ SAMSUNG 840 EVO SSD running Arch x64

How to install Arch on your C3x00 Zaurus https://github.com/danboid/ZALARM-install
