Hi,

how can I add the German "Umlaute" (ö,ü,ä) to the version 5.3.3 of pdaXii13?

Hi Climber,

if you edit the file /etc/X11/kb/akita.xmodmap (or maybe it's called spitz.xmodmap in pdaxii13?) you can add the Umlaute.

Change the relevant keycode lines as follows:

Code: [Select]
keycode 29 = u U udiaeresis Udiaeresis
keycode 23 = o O odiaeresis Odiaeresis
keycode 9  = a A adiaeresis Adiaeresis
keycode 27 = s S ssharp ssharp

So you have the Umlaute e.g. "ö" on Fn-o. "Ö" on Shift-Fn-o and so on.

After changing the file, you should restart X.

Daniel,

thanks for your quick answer. I changed it as you told me and restart X. Nothing different as before so I did a reboot. Nothing changed!!! When I take a look to the spitz.xmodmap I noticed that all my changes are gone!?

Does anybody have a idea why my changes were overwritten?

Hi Climber,

can you say from the time stamp of the file when exactly the file has been overwritten?

Maybe Meanie has done some magic here to overwrite the file on bootup or something like that.

Or you have a faulty file system, which may also result in file changes not saved to disk properly.

replace /etc/X11/kb/spitz.xmodmap with spitz-df.xmodmap and restart X or run xmodmap /etc/X11/kb/spitz.xmodmap

the keyboard mapping to enable support for Umlaute is slightly different than the default spitz mapping to accomodate Fn+a to be ä, Fn+Shift+a to be Ä, Fn+o = ö, Fn+Shift+o = Ö, Fn+u = ü, and Fn+Shift+u = Ü

the following keys had to be changed:

Fn+u which was { is now Fn+n
Fn+i which was } is now Fn+m
Fn+m which was å is now Fn+z
Fn+M which was Å is now Fn+Z
Fn+a which was æ is now Fn+x
Fn+A which was æÆ is now Fn+X
Fn+s which was EuroSign is now ß
Fn+S which was ß is now Þ
Fn+p which was £ is now EuroSign
Fn+P which was £ is still £
Fn+o which was ø is now Fn+v
Fn+O which was Ø is now Fn+V
Fn+i is now î
Fn+I is now Î
Fn+D is Ð
Fn+c is ç
Fn+Shift+q is é
Fn+Shift+w is ê
Fn+Shift+e is è
Fn+Shift+r is É
Fn+Shift+t is Ê
Fn+Shift+y is È

replace /etc/X11/kb/spitz.xmodmap with spitz-df.xmodmap and restart X or run xmodmap /etc/X11/kb/spitz.xmodmap

this is not entirely clear to me.
Is the -df file used, or the non-df file?

As for shifting all the other characters to make space for the Umlauts:
To make that easier for climber I append the xmodmap file I use for the weeXpc system, which contains a lot of often used international characters. It has the Umlauts and probably everything else a German user may usually need.
Also, appended is the overview over the key assignments, free assignable key combinations etc.

Climber, just download the akita.zip, unzip it and rename the .xmodmap file to the correct naming for pdaXii13 (-df, non-df...?), then it should work I think (except Meanie modified the codes used in rc.xml to trigger the actions of the application keys etc.)

spitz.xmodmap is the file being used. replace it with what is inside spitz-df.xmodmap which has extra mappings for deutsch&française

and oops, i forgot to include this file in the image...well next version then...

Meanie,Daniel

thanks for your help! Now I have my german 'Umlaute' but I can't set the brightness aynymore  with "Super" key and the digits 3/4.

I replaced the data inside spitz.xmodmap with the data inside akita.xmodmap from daniel.

Maybe I have to the add the responsible lines for controlling the brightness!

Thanks,
climber

Actuall, my akita.xmocmap supports these keys.

Maybe Meanies and my configuration are not compatible here.
Please have a look at the lines

Code: [Select]
keycode 49 = 1 exclam           1 F1
keycode 50 = 2 quotedbl         2 F2
keycode 51 = 3 numbersign       3 F3
keycode 52 = 4 dollar           4 F4

in my akita.xmodmap.
For the Fn equivalents (third colum after the "=") my file has set the bare numbers, so the decoding of Fn and the according actions are done elsewhere.

You may replace these lines (keycodes 49-52) by the according lines from Meanie's file in order to make this work again.

or upgrade to the latest pdaXii13 5.3.4 which now uses what used to be spitz-df as the default...

Wonderfull :-)

Could it be that you didn't copy the new version 5.3.4 to the server. I couldn't find it!

I have two questions for you: When I read other articles on the forum I heard that the file /media/fakeroot has to exist before installing pdaxii13. But when I take a look to mine I have only /media/realroot on it. Is this ok?

Could you take care to the problem when the zaurus boots it take very long time at the point:  "EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode".

Thanks for you help Meanie :-)

it depends on what model you have. pdaXii13 Spitz uses realroot whereas pdaXii13 Akita uses fakeroot, and none of them are needed if you have a C1000. the installer will create those directories if and when required...

It sounds like you are running pdaXii13 Spitz when you should be running pdaXii13 Akita...

I have a SL-C3100 and installed the hdimage-full.tgz for spitz. This is probably wrong!?

So I have to take the files on "http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/akita/" and the hdimage-full.tgz from this one "http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/tmp/".

Where can I find your newest version 5.3.4?
