Memory Leak And Rom Reflashing Question.
« on: May 02, 2007, 05:45:15 pm »
So, my sig tells you what I am running.
Over the last few months I have noticed that the memory usage on my machine has gradually been eroding, possibly due to a memory leak. For example, with SysInfo open I note the memory usage with no programs open. If I open say, Address Book, Opera, Calendar and Hancom Word, then close them all, then reopen SysInfo, I find that the Used, Buffer and Cached designations have all increased in size, meaning that Free memory has reduced. Each time I turn on the machine, open and close a program, the Free memory reduces a little. At this point I only have about 5100kb free. Is this anything to concern myself with, and is there a cure?

A second point: Over the year or so I have run Cacko I have installed then uninstalled several programs, and despite the uninstallations I am sure I have a bunch of files that are no longer needed (due to less-than-complete uninstallations) lots of Lib files for example.
If I reflash Cacko, is there a way to do this such that all my user settings don't need to be reentered and programs don't need to be reconfigured? Will I have to Reestablish all my PIM data for example?

I won't comment on the sysinfo figures don't have a clue!

However, during the flashing process isn't there an option, which we usually choose, for clearing/formatting the user space? If you leave it unformatted would it not leave your user settings and files alone?

I haven't tried it so can't reassure you on that.

Another possible approach is to use tar to back up your user settings and pim data. You should then be able to restore the tarred files after a reflash.

I believe that it is possible to copy the pim data to a card or to a pc using scp and then to write it back to your zaurus after flashing.

It has been discussed on the board, so using the search options should be a help.

On my early Sharp ROM, I found that I wanted Free Buffer space to be high.  If that one number was low, I couldn't get apps to load properly.  I didn't notice a difference made by the other numbers.

The Free K needs to go down for Free Buffer to go up, at least from my experience.  I learned what commands to enter that would make it go up, like searching for a file that didn't exist (find / -name xxxx) or loading specific apps.

When I have problems, it's because free Buffer has gone down.  Under 180k results in crashes in Opera 7.30 for me.
