Pdaxii3- How Can I Get Rid Of This Icon In The Ui?
« on: May 18, 2007, 01:26:49 pm »
Hey all, I've just installed pdaxii3 full and all has gone well. However on the interface there is an icon that looks like:

SC [ima]
IM  [ge]

You can drag it around the desktop however it keeps jumping back and hovering over the X menu in the bottom right corner so I have to move it every time I want to access the menu. I can't figure out what it does can anyone tell me? Also can i move/remove it somehow?

edit: Took a screen shot which shows the offending icon:

[img]http://www.varidev.co.uk/misc/gsnapshot.png\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]

Also, the screen is not automatically rotating when I rotate the screen, I have to manually choose to do it from the menu. Is there anyway I can get it to do it automatically?

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Added image to initial post ...

Also ... I've just noticed how full the memory bar is bottom right. Is that normal with just firefox open? Even without firefox open its at 66%!

I'm not sure why it is on the desktop, but it is for SCIM
You can disable scim in pdaxii13.conf
It is a Chinese language thing. I don't use it and am not sure how it works.
Look at meanie's page, it's described there.

Yea it seems to have gone from the desktop now somehow but is in the taskbar, I will disable it from the conf though (that just the GUI rather than having to edit a file?).

Are there any other applications I can remove to free up more memory that you recommend?

Just use the GUI pdaxii13 config under system tools.
You can disable other stuff in there, but if I recall correctly, meanie said SCIM is the main thing that is loaded by default that uses a considerable amount of memory.

OK I've removed SCIM from startup now, down to 44%! Might have a play around with some others see how they affect it.

I rebooted after disabled SCIM and my screen auto-rotation seems to be working again now, woot!

Thanks for your replies mate (in both threads), much appreciated.

You don't have to reboot to effect a lot of changes in pdaxii13/pdaxrom.
Just restart X (like this)
ctrl+alt+BS or from the menu, "Exit"
To restart X, type "startx" hit enter.

Cool I didn't know that, thanks! Another question sadly but how do I chnage my desktop background using IceWM? I found a thread in the search which said to edit ~/.icewm/preferences or something to that effect but the file didn't exist apparently.

Matchbox/Openbox uses a lot of memory, IIRC. Switching to IceWM or Fluxbox would help (if you're willing to spend a little time customizing/configuring). I think IceWM is installed in pdaXii13 by default, so it may be less work.

Yea I'm using IceWM after reading good things about it on the forum. However I still haven't figured out how to configure it, even just changing the desktop background lol.

I had a look at the IceWM site but it really isn't very easy to grasp does anyone know if there is a nice 'noob-friendly' guide to IceWm somewhere in the forums?

The config files should be in ~/.icewm, and should be fairly easy to understand.

For the background, I think that icewmbg is the app that displays it. It's probably set in .xinitrc.

See here: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=21768

It is a (long) thread that has everything you need to know about setting up IceWM. It is actually one of the easier window managers to configure even though configuration is done through editing text files instead of through a GUI interface.

The last few pages of that thread are what you are really after, because those pages deal mostly with Meanie's IceWM package (which is basically what is included in pdaXii13). I would recommend reading the whole thread though.

Also, Jon_J posted a link to a great website that basically outlines IceWM configuration for noobs (see this page: http://www.osnews.com/story.php/7774/IceWM...-Manager/page1/ )
Conics SL-C3200 running pdaXrom beta3 and XFCE with a Planex WiFi CF card.

pdaXii13 Full has openbox, icewm and fluxbox pre-installed. by default you get a dialog box at bootup time asking you to select which wm you want to use. the current default is icewm if you ignore the selection.

You can also always switch without rebooting by just exiting X and running xselect...

The new pdaXcfg (pdaXii13 Config Tool) allows you to change the pdaxii13.conf file without you needing to edit it manually. Eventually, the pdaXcfg tool can be used in all versions of pdaXrom. (it can already run on all versions, but not all the options are available yet)
