I contacted IPB's sales team to see how much it'd cost to upgrade.  Hopefully it's not too expensive or anything.  It seems like a standard license is $150 bucks.  If that's all it takes to get us to the latest version of IPB and fix that damn attachments issue, I'll shell out the money and get us upgraded.

As well, I've started researching upgrading our MediaWiki.  It would be a beautiful thing if I could integrate the two software's account systems, but I'm doubting that.  Either way, both upgrades will give us much better anti-spam capabilities.

Anyway, I'll let ya'll (there's the Texas side of me) know what they say and what our options are.  I really don't want to leave IPB since I know we're all used to it and for the most part it's been running great.  Hopefully they come back with a reasonable response and we can get all these things sorted out.

Edit: They also seem to have IP.Downloads which is some plugin that can handle all our files for another $50 bucks.  I hate to marry us to one main company, but from looking at the feature set it looks like it might be a good idea.

Check them out and let me know what you think.

I dont think we need the Gallery or Blog plugins, but if someone can make a reasonable argument for them I'll consider it.

Just a brief comment regarding the attachments problem...
I believe they were fine until the switch to ibiblio.
I don't think it's a problem with the forum version, but rather something in the transition setup.
I'd hate to see you waste your money and still have the same issues.

It was fine after the switch... I can just about 99.9999% vouch for that... I believe it stopped working around the time the Ibiblio upgraded to php5 from php4... :-(

Well honestly it's not just that.  2.0x is extremely buggy and we should've upgraded at some point anyway.  They're at 2.3 and it has tons of features (including a nice captcha system for the anti-spam) and tons and tons of security updates.  On that note, Ibiblio made us agree to stay up to date with all the IPB stuff so in order to keep our free hosting we really should upgrade anyway.

I got a response back.  Apparently the want me to fax them something on company letterhead stating that Mike isn't a part of the group and we want to account switched over to my name.  I'm not really comfortable pulling him out and well, haha, we're not exactly a company.  As long as 2.0.3 data can be imported right to 2.3.x, I'm just going to purchase a new standard license + the IP.Download module.

I'll let ya'll know of any other updates.

My idea was that many of these spambots are repeat offenders, so indefinite bans for them might help. As you can see from my contribs, almost 100% spam reverts, I do have a fair amount of time to do this spam patrol.

Of course there will be new ones until the 'new' registration procedures arrive, but I'm prepared to keep bashing away.

If you have a look at the recent changes page you will also see the name Meyer, he seems to be having a thrash at the spam too. maybe he would be willing to be a candidate for admin?

I'm going to fix up the bbs and Wiki before I do the file stuff.  I want to get everything in place and lined up first.  I'm sure I'll need some help from you guys to know which files we want updated and which files we want left out.

I'm ok with that as long as noone objects.  I do intend on adding another admin to the forum as well once it all settles down, so having 2 different admins for the Wiki I think is a good idea.

It may be too late for this, but just before you pulled everything down I realized there's one new wiki feature that would be useful: page deletion. On Wikipedia, the function isn't available to general users, but there is at least the "for deletion" templates and a system in place where after time for discussion an administrator can completely remove unnecessary pages from the database. It would be nice to have a system for doing that on OESF wiki since the spambots have created so many bogus pages for their link garbage.

Yup, I'm actually working on the Wiki right now.  Just sorting some PHP5 issues out.

Since you are now running MediaWiki 1.11.0, I strongly recommend (again) the recaptcha extension. (http://recaptcha.net)
It's really easy to install and with the default setting you can sit back and watch the spammers try hopelessly.
