It is an Unix machine and depends what you want and which level of exploration you are heading.

Normal user
  - PIM and good MP3 player should be good enough

Advancde user (like me)
  - Purchase some commercial packages, like Neocal, Tkc Player, to enhance its performance
  - Add high capacilty CF drive
  - Install ZBedic to store Wikipedia, English dictionary
  - Make use of unix commands for system and network tasks.
  - Install Zgcc to facilitate python and PyQt programming
  - Use VisiScript as my IDE for python programming
  - Use Porta-Base as database application
  - Install VNC sever for remote access

In short, it is not an obsolete machine which you can put it in good use and it is really a very reliable hardware to date.

Uh, no, it runs a OS [a href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix-like]Unix-like[/url] OS.
The main issues that I've found since OZ3.2 are lack of stability in the OS, from an inability to suspend/resume to applications crashing.  What OS are you using?

Yeah, the Collie is obsolete, but so is all the Zaurii family. Yet, when I use my Collie, it is so much more advanced than my Palm m515. While finding a stable operating system is a pain on a Collie, it is impossible on my Palm. At least people are working on the new and the old. There is still much to be excited about: Angstrom, pdaXrom and folks who are still making custom ROMS, even if they have old code.

I believe the Belkin card does support WPA. I managed to get on a WPA protected system once, but have failed all other times. It could be the card, but I think it is more likely the software.

I'm wondering if something might be locking up your CF slot (also known as ttyS3).

Next time run the following to see if there is a lock, or some other process is using ttyS3:

When it "doesn't work", do lights flicker and then poop out?

I've never used WAP but have done a lot of work unsnarling problems with ejecting CF cards and using a CF modem.

I'm resuscitating this topic to investigate someone else's opinion on the futeure of (my and your) poor littlòe Collie.

Some facts:
- some time there was an actively developed distribution, OpenZaurus, which mantained support for the Collie;
- when OZ switched to 2.6 kernel, they continued to support Collie with a specialised version using old 2.4 kernel, mainly because of legacy SD driver not supported in 2.6;
- at that time SD driver seemed to be the major blocker to a further development on Collie;
- then OZ closed in favour of Angstrom;
- suddenly something happened that restored the hopes of Collie users: a 2.6 SD driver was announced, angstrom included Collie in the supported machines list and everything seemed to go on fast.

But now it seems this sudden wave turned back:
- Angstrom no longer supports Collie (see here);
- A lot of bugs are open for Collie on Angstrom and there's apparently no one to take care (see here);
- It's almost impossible to know who is working on the issues, if any; there's a status page but it doesn't seem to be very up-to-date (or, worse enough, there's nothing to be updated...)

So my question is: is there any chance to see our Collies working with a recent kernel, an actively developed distro and all of its features working? What can we do to achieve this? Is there any interest in it?

JackA: there is a chance as always. Someone has to start work on collie support - thats all. Many developers have collie but also other devices so nothing strange that this old PDA is more and more dust covered.

Current status of collie is: 2.6.21 kernel works, SD/MMC works, no one works on getting it working in nice way. Guy who wrote SD/MMC support had problem with is desktop machine (mainboard breakage) and I do not know what is status of it.
