Should I Use R197 On C860
« on: July 10, 2007, 07:14:01 am »
Hi all, it's been around 9 months since I have looked at the forums and I wanted to know if r197 is stable/any better than beta1 on the C860?

I have my Z running ok now but if r197 is better I will try the upgrade.

Hi,

I never tried beta1 on my C860 so I don't know if R197 is better but everything I need works fine on R197 (with SP8).

I think it is worth trying.

Thanks Jan, just a couple more questions....

Are there any 'gotchas' with installing r197?

Which is the best way to install?

And finally are there XFCE packages?

Installation should go fine so long as you follow the instructions closely.

As for XFCE, you can use the packages that are available forbetas 1-3. I don't know the URL, but there are probably links in the XFCE customizations thread, or just google "xfce pdaxrom" without the quotes. That's what I do to find out if a package exists.

you should definitely stick with beta1. You can't neither compare beta1 with r197. The Zaurus is a touch screen AND keyboard platform, so - to me - having the touchscreen not working properly is a no-go. Since beta1 is the last release with properly working touchscreen, you have no alternative.

I used r197 for quite some time on my boxer. What touchscreen issues are you referring too?

did you ever try to write something with xstroke or sketchbook? Didn't you feel hard to click on buttons?

No, I guess I never did. My Z use is limited to reading ebooks & enews & watching videos. Not much touchscreen activity required for that .

Well thanks for the heads up, but how much of an issue is it?
If my C860 becomes unusable I will be as sick as a parrot.  I set it up ages ago and it has been so long that I cannot remember what I did!

Make a [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=NAND_Flash_Backup]NAND backup[/url] first. Then it's relatively easy to restore if you change your mind (I can't find the relevent restore info right now, but it's there). HTH

Ok I backed up the flash.
Should I use u-boot or just leave the boot loader as is?

A lot depends on what you use your boxer for:
if you use it for activities which only requite a tap once in a while you'll be fine,
if you use it with softare that requires frequent tapping you might be driven crazy.

BTW ... some broken things: (here are the first 2 that come into my mind)
the usb storage function is not working on r197
you can only undeclock and only by hand (applet does not work for cxx0 family)

Well I would not say it's unstable ... I also have a 5500 and some time ago it was running on an old rom version ... when I played solitare I had a crash ever 4 games on avarage.
On my C860 I've played for hours with quake and I had no crash. Generally I only reboot it when I want to change between the system on MMC and the on on the onboard NAND.

Make a backup and try for yourself so you allways have an easy way back.
